NEON x GLAAD Projects
Since its launch in 2020, NEON has worked collaboratively with brands and companies to create original content that amplifies the visibility of the Black queer community across media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. In addition to working on collaborations and campaigns, NEON has also produced numerous digital content series’ uplifting Black LGBTQ+ voices and experiences and boosting the profile of our stories. Black History Month Legacy Series
In February 2020, NEON x GLAAD debuted their first project: the Black History Month Legacy Series. The series highlighted LGBTQ leaders across various disciplines as those featured pay homage to groundbreaking LGBTQ figures who have shaped our history. Legacy Series
Roya Marsh, a Bronx, New York native, reflects on the impact Audre Lorde has had on her artistry. Marsh is a nationally recognized poet, performer, educator, and activist, has served as the Poet in Residence at Urban Word NYC, and works feverishly towards LGBTQIA justice and dismantling white supremacy.
Twiggy Pucci Garcon, an activist, advocate, and healer, reflects on the impact legendary ballroom figure Willi Ninja has had on her artistry. Twiggy has collaborated with artists, filmmakers, academics, and policymakers to increase visibility of both creative and sociopolitical agendas. With over 13 years of experience in the public health education and direct services, she has extensive knowledge of the needs of the LGBTQ youth population and how to foster relationships with organizations that offer effective, quality services. Twiggy is the Senior Program Director at True Colors United. She also sits on the Board of Directors for Doc Society and serves as a consultant and choreographer on Ryan Murphy’s 7-time Emmy nominated hit FX series, POSE. She is a consulting programmer for Outfest, Newfest, and Outfest Fusion, the Overall Overseer for the Legendary International House of Comme Des Garcon, and the Chief Ambassador for the Center for Black Equity.
Torrian L. Baskerville, an unapologetic Black queer advocate, activist, and agent of change, reflects on the impact that Bayard Rustin has had on his life and work. Baskerville has a deep love for social service and an unwavering drive to reduce health disparities, increase visibility, and improve health outcomes for marginalized populations, especially youth and young adults, persons living with HIV, and Black and Latinx men who have sex with men. Torrian is the Statewide LGBTQ Prevention Manager at Hyacinth Foundation and Founder/Managing Partner of Mounted Wings Group, LLC. He sits on several advisory boards including the New Jersey HIV Planning Group and He is Valuable, Incorporated; and serves as Board Chair of The Door: Adolescent Health Center in New York City.
Actress Jari Jones reflects on the impact Marsha P. Johnson has had on her life and work. Jari is a Black Transgender actress, curve model, activist, and creative. With her career start in theater, she has graced some of New York’s greatest stages, such as The Public Theater’s Production of Elizabeth Swado’s “The Runaways,” Here Art Center’s “The Sex Myth: A Devised Play,” and Lin Manuel’s “In The Heights.” Jari later shifted her career into TV & Film, and has been featured in POSE, Sundance nominated film Adam, Netflix’s Tales of The City, and the highly acclaimed Transparent: Musical Movie Finale. Recently she has produced alongside Martin Scorsese and RT Films, as well as co-starred in the new film Port Authority, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival. Jari is the first Black trans woman to have a film produced and premiere at Cannes in its 72 year entirety. After building a successful career as a fashion and editorial photographer, she jumped on the other side of the lens and into publication and campaigns, quickly becoming internationally recognized as a Trans and Body Positive model and influencer. Jari has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Teen Vogue, Allure, and recently in PAPER Magazine Predictions: 100 people taking over 2019, with her insight on fashion within politics, body positivity, LGBTQ community building, and relationships.
Creative, actor, and activist Danielle Cooper reflects on the impact and legacy of Stormé Delarverie. In 2014, Danielle launched “She’s a Gent,” a blog that celebrates and explores personal style while also using it as a tool to bring awareness to QPOC (queer people of color) and androgynous women in menswear. In a very short period of time, her platform transformed into a multi-digital publication which creates visibility for underrepresented QPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. Danielle is committed to empowering others through content creation and storytelling. “She’s a Gent” has been recognized in Forbes, The New York Times, Huffington Post, OUT Magazine, Vogue, and Nike.com. In addition to creating “She’s a Gent,” Danielle recently made her acting debut on Season 2 of the historic and groundbreaking 7-time Emmy nominated FX series, POSE. Her mission is to continue to help open doors for queer people of color in television/film and across all media platforms.
Anthony Wayne, a producer, writer, and actor, reflects on the mighty real impact that Sylvester has had on him as a performer. Seen on Broadway in “Anything Goes,” “Once on this Island,” “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” and “Pippin,” Anthony’s touring credits include “A Chorus Line” as Richie, “The Color Purple,” and “Fame the Musical.” He has completed a yearlong run in the new Broadway production of “”Tootsie the Musical” and is working on bringing his show “Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical” to Broadway. Additionally, Anthony, in collaboration with Kendrell Bowman, created ANTHONYKEN LLC, a production company which specializes in bringing community issues and social awareness to the forefront through performing arts and media. The company was created to inspire and encourage others to be multifaceted individuals through adversity.

Legacy Series
George M Johnson discusses the lasting legacy and impact of James Baldwin. George is an award-winning writer and author, perhaps most well-known for their Indie bestselling All Boys Aren’t Blue, a memoir manifesto discussing their young adult experience growing up Black and Queer. George has written on a range of topics for publications like Teen Vogue, NBC, The Root, & Buzzfeed, with appearances on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation. George is also an LGBTQ and HIV activist and advocate.
Pop recording artivist, ‘Stopkillingus’ viral campaign creator, and transgender superstar Mila Jam reflects on the influence the great Josephine Baker has had on her. Mila Jam has toured internationally with the Broadway musical RENT and performed alongside the likes of James Brown. Mark Ronson, Laverne Cox, Travis Wall, Jody Watley, Deee-Lite, Natasha Bedingfield, and Monet Xchange. Her notable on-screen appearances include Saturday Night Live, FX’s POSE, BBC’s The Lily Allen Show, and MTV with special features in Billboard, PAPER, NEWNOWNEXT, Huffington Post, OUT Magazine, and The Phluid Project.
Multidisciplinary artist Nyx Nocturne reflects on the impact Gladys Bentley has had on them. Known as “the babe that goes bump in the night,” Nyx Nocturne uses their body to explore gender-fluidity and desirability politics through drag and burlesque. Their signature performance style blurs the line between hedonistic delights and grotesque discomfort as a means of challenging audiences to re-examine what excites them. Nyx has cast their shadow on pages and stages such as GQ, the New York Public Library, BAM, New York Live Arts, Inside Out Film Festival, Club Cumming, Sasha Velour’s Nightgowns, and Austin Drag Fest. They were named the 2019 Best Burlesque/Boylesque performer at the Brooklyn Nightlife Awards and are a member of the award winning queer performance collective, Switch n’ Play (@switchnplay), which was the focal point of the feature documentary, A Night at Switch n’ Play. Once described as “utterly shocking,” Nyx Nocturne is the dazzling nightmare fantasy you never knew you wanted.
Activist, writer, and media strategist Raquel Willis reflects on the influence that Monica Roberts has had on her. Raquel Willis is dedicated to elevating the dignity of marginalized people, particularly Black transgender people. She has served as the Director of Communications for The Ms. Foundation, a former executive editor of OUT Magazine, and a former national organizer for Transgender Law Center (TLC). In 2018, she founded Black Trans Circles, a project of TLC, focused on developing the leadership of Black trans women in the South and Midwest by creating healing justice spaces to work through oppression-based trauma and incubating community organizing efforts to address anti-trans murder and violence. During her time at OUT, she published the Trans Obituaries Project to highlight the epidemic of violence against trans women of color and developed a community-sourced 13-point framework to end the epidemic. This project won a GLAAD Media Award. Raquel is a thought leader on gender, race, and intersectionality. She’s experienced in online publications, organizing marginalized communities for social change, non-profit media strategy, and public speaking while using digital activism as a major tool of resistance and liberation.

Changemakers
In 2021 NEON x GLAAD and Ally presented “Changemakers,” a four-part video series that amplifies the stories of local Black LGBTQ+ heroes and business owners across America who are driving cultural change with their work. In this series, GLAAD and Ally teamed up to shed light on changemakers who, despite incredible challenges, are committed to doing it right in their local communities. The series sends messages of support and inspiration to Black, LGBTQ-owned small businesses.

Kingsley Gbadegesin is a first-generation Nigerian-American and New York-based creator working to advance liberation for the Black community, the queer community, and people of color. Kingsley is the founder and creator behind K.NGSLEY, a Black-owned brand aiming to reclaim and redefine the Black, queer, femme body and create and share the tangible, direct support communities need. BLK MKT Vintage is a Brooklyn-based antique/vintage concept shop specializing in collectibles, cast-offs, and curiosities which represent the richness of Black history and lived experience. Curated by founders Jannah Handy and Kiyanna Stewart, the collection includes found items like vintage literature, vinyl records, clothing, art, housewares/decor, furniture, and other goods. Black, Gifted & Whole is a non-profit, founded by Guy Anthony, that aims to empower young queer Black men by acknowledging, celebrating, and affirming their whole selves. Since its inception in 2015, Black, Gifted & Whole has helped over 19 students realize their college dreams and continues to be a beacon long after their freshman year. “We have literally built a pipeline from high school to college to the workforce,” Anthony explains, adding, “This is my love letter to Black, Queer students.”
Chef Joya, a premiere vegan chef from Charlotte, North Carolina specializes in soul food, Caribbean, African, and Latin cuisines. Chef Joya brings comfort food into green eating and loves to teach others how to find joy in doing the same. Learn more about Chef Joya here.
Changemakers Season Two
Season Two
The season 2 premiere features the House of Tulip Executive Director, Mariah Moore. Moore is a Black trans woman who leads New-Orleans based nonprofit organization House of Tulip. House of Tulip provides zero-barrier housing, case management, linkage to care, and community programming to trans and gender nonconforming people in need of a safe place to stay while growing the supply of affordable housing in the area.
Episode 2 features Stealth Bros & Co Founder/CEO Braxton Fleming discusses his journey to establishing Stealth Bros & Co. Stealth Bros & Co is a luxury Dopp kit supply company that provides travel and at home personal storage for medical/personal necessities. Fleming was recently featured on Shark Tank where he secured a deal for Stealth Bros & Co.
Dani LaLonders discusses their journey as the Lead Developer of ValiDate. ValiDate is a visual novel/game about 13 struggling singles navigating the harsh realities of love and life. Learn more about ValiDate here.
Layshia Clarendon is the first openly trans/non-binary WNBA player and the first active WNBA player to have top surgery. They are also the founder of the Layshia Clarendon Foundation.
