There’s a new season of Nine Perfect Strangers premiering on Hulu which means Nicole Kidman returning as the unhinged Masha with a new severe lob haircut as well as a new psychedelic shroom trip for a whole new batch of dysfunctional people with a whole mess of problems — including Tina and Wolfie, played by King Princess and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, respectively.
Set in a mysterious Alpine wellness resort, Tina and Wolfie are a lesbian couple on the brink of collapse. Both are incredible musicians, but Tina was a child prodigy who has lost the will to play piano. They have come to the resort to seek the help of Masha — well, at least one of them has.
Princess, who makes her television acting debut in Nine Perfect Strangers, told Anthony Allen Ramos during a recent interview that she called Richardson-Sellers as soon as she booked the role and asked her “how are we going to make this fierce?”
“We’re walking into a six-year long lesbian death bed relationship,” Princess explains, saying that things are really toxic between Wolfie and Tina when we meet them. “We wanted to craft something that felt really nuanced and interesting and real to the community… I got to show a couple episodes to some of my dyke friends, and the were like, ‘I feel that’.”
She adds, “I think that that’s what’s so great about stuff like this is when you have queer people playing queer people — you get to go into these really specific nuance [of] codependence and what happens after six years together. [Wolfie is a] momager kind of figure, and it’s interesting and dark.”
Even though there are well-rounded LGBTQ characters, Richardson-Sellers points out that their narrative is not about Tina and Wolfie’s queer identity. “It’s a toxic love story — and that can be relatable to anyone,” she said. “I think that’s the nuance.” She adds that roles like this let them show their “whole rainbow”.
Princess and Richardson-Sellers are joined by Henry Golding, Lena Olin, Annie Murphy, Christine Baranski, Lucas Englander, Murray Bartlett, Dolly de Leon, Mark Strong, and Aras Aydin in this new season of Nine Perfect Strangers.
Nine Perfect Strangers premieres May 21 on Hulu with two episodes with weekly episodes dropping through July 2.
