To talk about their experience making the film, GLAAD’s Yolanda Lenge was joined by stars Heidi N Closet and Crystal Methyd.
“We’re feeling like superstars,” Crystal Methyd exclaims.
“I’ve always wanted to test my hand at acting,” Heidi reveals. “I’ve just been so surprised with how I was able to connect. I think I got fortunate with the character I got because I was able to kind of relate.”
Crystal reveals she has been a fan of horror movies since high school. “I would always watch them in the basement with my friends, so I’ve been obsessed ever since then.” She goes on to say, “I didn’t think I was going to be the screaming girl, but I really am glad that I am!”
Heidi speaks about how as hate directed towards drag queens is on the rise, it’s important to have films like this normalizing and celebrating the art. “The more representation that we see… the better things get for everyone. People can see themselves in us on the screen and say, ‘I can do that too.'”
“Nothing is off limits.” Heidi goes on to say, “I may be a queer Black guy from the south, I may be this, I may be that, but it doesn’t dictate what I can do.”
Crystal talks about how exciting it is to be diversifying the type of media drag queens are featured in. “In this movie, you see drag queens in a way I feel like we haven’t really seen yet,” explaining that, “It’s so fun to have drag content that isn’t just a competition, it’s actually a fun movie.”
The two agree that one of their favorite parts of working on the film was teaching the straight crew members drag lingo. Crystal shares that every time one of them said ‘sorry,’ Heidi would say “Don’t be sorry, be fierce,” and it became a running joke on set.
“I think we’re addicted to acting,” Crystal said when asked if they wanted to continue acting. “We’re already hoping for a sequel!” Heidi chimed in.
