It’s official! Ezra Sosa is the newest professional dancer joining the Dancing with the Stars cast!
While he’s been a part of the DWTS universe as a troop dancer since 2021, Sosa recently received the news that he’d be joining the team of pro dancers full time. This means Sosa will be assigned a celebrity partner who he’ll help train to reach their full potential in the ballroom.
To talk about this exciting announcement and so much more, Sosa joined GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos.
“It hasn’t hit me yet,” Sosa says about the news. “When I got the call, I honestly was in a state of shock.” He says that he has been waiting so long to achieve this goal, so it still feels surreal.
Sosa is excited to be representing the LGBTQ community on the 33rd season of this iconic show. However, being out and proud hasn’t come without its challenges. He says that, “When I first joined the show, I had a huge sense of imposter syndrome because at the time, I wasn’t out… and it wasn’t until this year when I realized the power, the power of being fruity and the power of just truly just being yourself.”
He goes on to talk about how accepting and supportive the whole Dancing with the Stars community has been. “When I first joined the show, it was the first time I was in an environment where I truly felt accepted.” He goes on to share say, “That has a huge sense of me becoming the person I am today.”
He then talks about how it was pop star and dancer JoJo Siwa who gave him the courage to come out. “When I first met (JoJo Siwa) on the show, she knew I was in the closet, she knew I was gay, but she also knew how uncomfortable I was in my own skin.”
He continues, “I went on tour with her…and it was constant days where she would put makeup on my face and I would be bawling in her arms because it made me so uncomfortable because I was raised that it wasn’t ok for guys to wear makeup, for guys to wear glittery things, for guys to wear crop tops, but she was this person starting to introduce these things into my life and it took a very long time.”
Sosa is also excited to be bringing Latin inclusion into the ballroom this season. He shares, “Growing up in Utah, I wasn’t really exposed to my culture and my grandma always called me ‘gringa,’ and I had a hard time just diving into it.” He says, “When I moved to L.A., I started going to Salsa Clubs, started taking salsa class and I really just understood how amazing it is to be Hispanic and how much extra rhythm I got in these hips.”
Don’t miss Sosa on Dancing with the Stars season 33 on September 17th on ABC and Disney+, streaming the next day on Hulu.
