Great news for LGBTQ horror fans! My Animal the frightening, genre-bending, queer love story you’ve been waiting for, and it’s coming soon to theaters!
My Animal is a supernatural film that follows the romance between Heather, played by Bobbi Salvör Menuez and Jonny played by Amandla Stenberg, and a hidden family curse. Their love threatens to unravel Heather’s suppressed desires, tempting her to unleash the animal within.
In an exclusive new clip, fans get a sneak peek at what to expect from Salvör Menuez’s character.
“It’s different for us,” Henry, who is played by Stephen McHattie says to Heather. “We need to take care of each other, and this is me taking care of you.”
After helping his daughter stop her bloody nose, he reassures her that “Your secret is safe with me.”
My Animal was written by Jae Matthews and directed by Jacqueline Castel, marking both of their feature film debuts!
Castel stated that “My Animal is a story about inheritance: of what gets passed through our lineage and how that defines us as individuals. It is also a story about first love and how that can serve as a catalyst for radical change, revealing what we most need and what most needs healing within us.”
Castel went on to say that, “Like Heather, I understand the quiet despair and isolation of being an outsider in a small town, and of rebelling against it in youth only to discover that the most treasured and distinctive aspects of my selfhood derive from the very things I attempted to reject. What made me different also defined and ultimately transformed me.”
“I invite the viewer to get lost in the otherness of Heather Anderson,” Castel explains. “In so doing, I not only compel the audience to feel connected to a character who at first may appear to have little in common with them, but also to learn the same lessons that she does: only by embracing the traits that make us outcasts, and even subject to scorn, do we learn to become fully ourselves.”
To find out what happens next, fans can see the film in select theaters on September 8th and can stream it digitally starting September 15th. Watch the official trailer here:
