Dylan O’Brien is stepping into a daring dual role in Twinless, the new film from writer-director James Sweeney. The film, which had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year, will debut in limited theaters on Friday, September 5, 2025. The two sat down with Vice President of Communications and Talent, Anthony Allen Ramos, to talk about bringing the story to life.
For O’Brien, choosing projects like Twinless is about amplifying stories that are rarely told.
“They had so much color in them that we just don’t get the chance to see,” O’Brien shared. “The fact that I even had the opportunity to be part of this industry of getting them made… especially Twinless, was a journey I wanted to tap into, both as an actor and a collaborator to James. He’s someone I believe in entirely.”
Sweeney, who wrote and directed the film, praised O’Brien’s commitment to new voices.
“It’s not entirely common in this industry for actors with choices to champion original filmmakers,” Sweeney said. “Dylan stuck with this project since 2020, when many actors might have walked away if things stalled. That’s a testament to his character and taste.”
When it came to playing twins, O’Brien credited Sweeney’s direction for giving him freedom to take risks.
“There’s nothing better you can get from a filmmaker you trust than permission,” O’Brien explained. “Trusting James allowed me to go for broke and try things I might have doubted myself in otherwise. Relinquishing control in that way was beautiful.”
As Twinless prepares for release, Sweeney hopes the film sparks conversation.“I hope people see it, have a communal experience.”
Twinless will be in limited theaters on Friday, September 5, 2025.
