Premiering Wednesday, April 3rd, Loot season 2 will take place a year after last season’s finale. We find Molly, (Maya Rudolph) thriving in her role as the head of her philanthropic organization, the Wells Foundation. Focused mainly on her charity work, Molly has sworn off any new relationships with men and embarks on a wellness journey. Fabulously single but not particularly independent, Molly keeps her trusty assistant Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster) by her side. While everything is running smoothly with Sofia Salinas (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez), the no-nonsense executive director in charge, fans will have to tune in to see what hilarious and heartwarming hi-jinx are sure to ensue!
To talk about the new season, GLAAD’s Yolanda Lenge was joined by stars Maya Rudolph, Joel Kim Booster, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Ron Funches, and Nat Faxon.
As both the star of the series as well as executive producer, actress and comedian Maya Rudolph spoke about why it is important to her to include so many diverse identities. “I’m a big fan of representation that looks like the life that I know.”
“Throughout the course of my life, I’ve certainly seen things that I can’t completely connect with or relate to.” She goes on to explain that, “What’s nice about that is, it’s just kind of part of what everybody brings to the table and then we start from there. Everybody gets to feel a little bit more real in that way. It’s not something I ever really pen to paper set out to do, but at this point in my life, it’s something that’s really important to me.”
Out actor, writer, and comedian Joel Kim Booster spoke about how “incidental” the LGBTQ and other types of representation are in the show. “Our identities really aren’t centered in the show necessarily in most of the episodes. It’s really refreshing for me as a performer but also as a viewer.”
He goes on to say, “I think it’s really important that we just get to see people who look like me or are like me just living their lives and doing their job, not necessarily having it be about trauma or you know the issues surrounding their identities.”
Booster is excited for fans to get to know his character better this season and “see the other side of that coin and see why they are that way.”
Ron Funches is excited to be bringing a bit of himself into his role as Howard. “For me, I just try to bring my sense of joy and positivity to this character and what also being realistic and calling things out when they need to be called out.”
Faxon, who plays Arthur, says he’s learned a lot from his character. “I can certainly connect with a lot of the flaws that he has. But I guess what I admire about the character and what I try to remind myself when I’m playing it is that it’s always just as good to be a good listener as it is to be a good communicator.”
Rodriguez hopes that similar to Rudolph’s character Molly, there are wealthy people in the real world that will use their resources for good. “She has billions of dollars but has this beautiful heartwarming delivery of this character and it goes to show that there possibly are billionaires out there that are like her, that you can change their mind around and teach them something new. And tell them, this is how we can help in changing the world if you can change your pockets and use it for good.”
