W Magazine’s first issue of the year is almost here! Volume 1 is set to hit the stands on February 13th, 2024 and will feature W’s annual “Best Performances” issue.
The highly anticipated portfolio is an annual feature curated by W’s editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg. It aims to highlight the “stars at the forefront of cinema, from industry legends and icons to those whose phenomenal talent is ushering in a new wave of stardom.”
This year’s Best Performance issue features Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Greta Lee, Ryan Gosling, Robert Downey Jr., Nicolas Cage, Charles Melton, Zac Efron, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Margot Robbie as well as LGBTQ trailblazers Colman Domingo, Lily Gladstone, andJodie Foster.
The stars were styled by W Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Sara Moonves and photographed by Juergen Teller on Hollywood Boulevard.
Domingo, who starred in the 2023 musical The Color Purple, spoke about what it was like to work so closely with Oprah. “Oprah and I have become dear friends. She’s a love. We were actually on the phone last night, talking about clothes… And then I made her laugh. Her laugh is a laugh that I think nobody knows about—it’s the Oprah-just-talking-to-a- friend laugh and not thinking that she’s Oprah.”
In 2023, Domingo also starred in the groundbreaking biopic Rustin, a film about Martin Luther King Jr.’s openly gay advisor who dedicated his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy.
He went on to discuss how important costumes and styling are in the different projects he’s worked on. “I’m very clear about collaborating with my costume designers. I remember one scene with Rustin: He’s having dinner at his house, and he’s cooking Indian food. I asked for an outfit with a print, something from his travels. I’m like, ‘Can we find that?’ They found this really beautiful print shirt and even a necklace. I was like, ‘That feels like Bayard.”
Killers of the Flower Moon actor Lily Gladstone revealed that their celebrity boyband crush was always Lance Bass. “Unfortunately, I think I was barking up the wrong tree. Still a gorgeous man, though!” She went on to say that her first kiss happened when she “was freshman class president, and he was sophomore class president. He was popular. I was reluctantly popular. The kiss was at an Associated Student Body retreat. Just a quick, very nervous kiss. We didn’t last.”
Industry legend Jodie Foster spoke candidly about her experience working as a child actor in the classic film Taxi. “I first worked with Martin Scorsese when I was about 10, on Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. By the time I was 12, I’d made a lot more films than De Niro or Scorsese. They were definitely scared of me: ‘What do we do with this 12-year-old?’ I was in my hot pants and corkies, or whatever those platform shoes were called.”
Foster starred in the 2023 biopic NYAD, which tells the story of Dianna Nyad, an out lesbian swimmer who the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without using a shark cage in 2013.
The NYAD star also revealed her love for Halloween! “Are you kidding me? I’m a huge Halloween fan. I was a Smurf for many years. I kept my Smurf mask until it smelled really bad…[I was] Papa Smurf, of course! With the beard and the blue and the whole thing.”
