PHOTOS: GLAAD, THE ADVOCATE AND MSNBC FILMS WITH TIME STUDIOS, HOST VIP SCREENING OF DOCUMENTARY FEATURE ON THE HISTORY AND OVERTURNING OF THE U.S. MILITARY’S DISCRIMINATORY ‘DON’T ASK DON’T TELL’ POLICY
Los Angeles, CA — November 9, 2023 – Overnight at the Melrose Rooftop Theatre in West Hollywood, GLAAD, The Advocate and MSNBC Films with TIME Studios, hosted a VIP screening of “Serving in Secret: Love, Country and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a documentary feature which focuses on the history of LGBTQ discrimination in the military and the series of events leading to the overturn of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2012. The film highlights the story of former Marine Captain, Tom Carpenter, and his experiences as a closeted service member who joined legions of others to advocate for LGBTQ equality in Armed Forces.
The VIP screening, which took place on the eve of Out Magazine’s Out100 gala, included out military veterans and active duty members of the military, LGBTQ movement leaders as well as creators, journalists and several Out100 honorees.
NBC Out’s Jay Valle led an insightful and powerful post-screening conversation with former Marine Captain Tom Carpenter, associate producer and researcher, Jade Hill and Senior Editor at The Advocate, John Casey.
Executive Director of Digital Content at equalpride, Kayla Gagnet, Senior Director for Global LGBTQ+ Equality at Procter & Gamble, Brent Miller, and Senior Director of Communications at GLAAD, Tony Morrison, shared remarks at the VIP screening.
The MSNBC Turning Point documentary features key interviews including Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, Former Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning, Former Under Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy, Rachel Maddow among others and premieres this Sunday night November 12th at 10pm on MSNBC, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
