Following up their short film highlighting the importance of protecting Black trans lives, Google has released a new short film for Trans Awareness Week about Marli Washington, the founder of gc2b, a company that creates chest binders by and for the trans community. The film is one of Google’s latest initiatives to highlight the resilience and excellence within the trans community.
The short film follows Marli’s journey from inspiration to the founding of gc2b, spotlighting why products like chest binders are important to trans and non-binary people, and hearing from trans people about the way the product imprives their lives. “When you’re aligned with who you are, you have the ability to do whatever you want.”
This year, GLAAD partnered with Google to produce this film, alongside Raquel Willis and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute. The partnership is also debuting some of the data showcasing how Americans are seeking to learn about the trans community and become better allies.
Google Trends Data is a timely and revealing reflection of the world, and notably the data indicates that America is trying to understand the root causes of the alarming epidemic of violence and murder faced by trans people, particularly Black trans women.
For context, “Black trans lives matter” was searched 10x more in 2020 compared to 2019. Additionally, the following searches reached all-time highs:
- U.S. search interest for “transphobia” reached an all-time high in 2020
