The nominations for the 78th Tony Awards were announced today by Tony Award winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce with a healthy roster of queer nominees throughout. This year’s ceremony will return to Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 8 with GLAAD Media Award honoree and Oscar-nominated Wicked star Cynthia Erivo holding space as host for the evening. The Tony Awards will air live on June 8 PM ET on CBS and stream stateside on Paramount+. CBS and Pluto TV will present the pre-show The Tony Awards: Act One. Cole Escola‘s Mary Todd Lincoln stage comedy opus Oh, Mary! received five nominations with Escola recieving a nom for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play. Their co-star Conrad Ricamora also earned a nom for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. Oh, Mary! director Sam Pinkleton and costume designer Holly Pierson received nods while the whole production is in the running for Best Play.
Jonathan Groff is looking to add another trophy to his mantle with a nom for the musical Just in Time. Kara Young is also up for another win with a nom for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for her performance in Purpose whiler her co-star Jon Michael Hill is also in the running for a Tony Award. In addition, Taylor Trensch received a nom for Floyd Collins and Jak Malone for Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.
It was also previously announced that legend Harvey Fierstein will receive the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Fresh off his historic Oscar win for Wicked, Paul Tazewell could be on his way to adding another Tony Award to his collection. Previously winning for Hamilton in 2016, Tazewell is nominated for his costume design for Death Becomes Her.
There is a three-way tie when it comes to the most nominations. Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending earned 10 nominations each. Other notable nods include Pirates! The Penzance Musical which features Drag Race icon Jinkx Monsoon, as well as Romeo + Juliet which includes Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor.
