Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) Mikko Mäkelä’s latest drama Sebastian hits select theaters today! The film explores the power of queerness and the transformative impact of embracing a new identity, following Max (queer actor Ruaridh Mollica), a 25-year-old aspiring writer who begins moonlighting as a sex worker under the pseudonym Sebastian. As he confronts conflicting feelings of ecstasy, shame, and exhilarating liberation, Max has to reckon with whether Sebastian is merely a writer’s tool to achieve first-hand authenticity or whether something more is at stake. Watch the trailer below and catch Sebastian in theaters in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, with a national expansion to follow!
2.) In celebration of International LGBTQ Allyship Day, the award-winning film THIS TIME is being released in cities across the US and Canada next week! The coming-of-age movie follows a closeted LGBTQ teen who inherits her deceased father’s journal and discovers cryptic clues about his secret life. To fulfill his dying wish, she blackmails a driver to race her cross-country for a long-shot rendezvous with her father’s friend. Starring out actress Anwen O’Driscoll, Grammy-nominee Debora Cox, and RuPaul’s Drag Queen performer Xtacy Love, the film underscores the importance of LGBTQ allyship, especially for queer and trans youth, aiming to spark impactful conversations and foster understanding across diverse communities. In partnership with nonprofit Free Mom Hugs, screenings begin August 7 and will include virtual, live-stream panel discussions with several prolific community allies and leaders! 3.) Hulu announced the upcoming documentary Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara. Directed by true-crime specialist Erin Lee Carr, the pic revolves around lesbian twins Tegan and Sara Quin, telling the intimate story of Tegan’s identity being stolen and weaponized in a complex catfishing scheme that has been stalking and terrorizing their fans and the LGBTQ for over 15 years. 4.) Queer What We Do in the Shadows breakout Harvey Guillén is producing and starring in bromance comedy That Friend about the dynamics of friendship and growing up! In the feature, Guillén plays Paul, who crashes his friend Henry’s trip with his girlfriend. When Paul’s pack of drug-laced cigarettes ends up in the hands of a stranger, the night takes a turn for the worst. Keep your eyes peeled for more details as they surface!

5.) Not only has Hulu debuted the official trailer for Solar Opposites season five, but the streamer also renewed the hit series for a sixth season! The animated show revolves around a family of four aliens—Terry, Korvo, Jesse and Yumyulack—who escape their exploding home planet only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. In the upcoming season, Korvo and Terry celebrate their honeymoon and embrace married life while Yumyulack and Jesse try to avoid getting held back in school. 6.) AMC teased Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire season three with a first-look at Lestat’s rocker alter-ego! The contemporary adaptation of Rice’s gothic novel of the same name chronicles Louis de Pointe de Lac, Lestat de Lioncourt and Claudia’s story of love and immortality, as told through interviews with journalist Daniel Molloy. In the upcoming season, Lestat starts a band and goes on tour, embarking on a pilgrimage across space, time and trauma. Check out the teaser below and watch the first two seasons on AMC+ now!
7.) Pamaount+ debuted a teaser trailer for the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks! The animated comedy series focuses on the support crew serving on one of the Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos. In the new season, the underdog crew—including bisexual rule-breaker Beckett Mariner—must close “space potholes,” which are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Watch the teaser below and catch the season five premiere October 24! In more Lower Decks news, IDW Publishing is officially bringing back Star Trek: Lower Decks in an all-new ongoing series. Launching its first issue November 13, the series features episodic storytelling with each tale presented by a different artist!
8.) In more Star Trek news, out legacy actors Tig Notaro and Mary Wiseman joined the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, alongside previously announced lesbian guest star Gina Yashere. The Paramount+ series introduces a young group of cadets who navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself. Notaro and Wiseman will reprise their roles as Jett Reno and Sylvia Tilly, respectively, and Yashere will play an Academy instructor! Additionally, the streamer announced an upcoming Star Trek live-action comedy series! In the show, co-written by gay multihyphenate Justin Simien and Tawny Newsome, Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.

9.) The Forman’s are returning to the small screen sooner than originally planned! In the sequel series That ‘90s Show, 15 years have passed and Eric and Donna’s daughter meets a brand new group of friends in Point Place, including gay teen Ozzie Takada. Part three now premieres on Netflix August 22; stream parts one and two today!

10.) Fresh off her groundbreaking Emmy nomination, trans Baby Reindeer breakout Nava Mau has been set to guest star in the fifth and final season of You. Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, You follows Joe Goldberg, a man who will do just about anything for the sake of love. Mau will play Detective Marquez; stay tuned for more information on You’s final chapter!

11.) CNN Originals is launching a new travel series featuring different celebrity hosts! With the working title My Happy Place, the series follows celebrities as “they venture to a personally meaningful place in their lives,” including LGBTQ talent Alan Cumming and Billy Porter.

12.) Billie Eilish kicked off her BRAT summer with Charli xcx in a new remix of Guess! Don’t miss the music video below. In other music news, queer breakout artist Dhruv dropped the track “Grieving” alongside a music video, off the upcoming album Private Blizzard, out August 23! Additionally, pop singer-songwriter MARIS debuted the new single “Salt Water Taffy” and queer dark-pop princess LEXXE dropped her latest single “Labyrinth!” Billy Porter also shared a new remix for his single “Leap.”
13.) Queer indie-rockers Mediocre announced their debut full-length album Growth Eater, due out September 27, alongside their pink-infused lead single “Fun Time Fix (We Go Go);” check out the music video below! Trans artist and model Britney Manson also announced her debut EP Hot Couture, out August 30, and released the new track “Philipp Plein” with a lyric video! Last but certainly not least, Sherry Vine shared the music video “Showgirl,” from The Sherry Vine Variety Show season three; watch the premiere now on OUTtv, with new episodes every Thursday!
