Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) It’s time to make fetch happen with Mean Girls! The highly anticipated re-imagining of the 2004 original brings a modern twist to an iconic classic, featuring gay actor Jaquel Spivey as Damian and bisexual actress Auli’i Cravalho as Janis. Five years after playing everybody’s favorite bully on Broadway, don’t miss Reneé Rapp reprising her role as Regina George on the big screen! 2.) The taut thriller He Went That Way is now available on demand! Set in 1964, the film is based on a true crime story that puts a wicked spin on the buddy road trip film. He Went That Way follows 19-year-old serial killer Bobby (Jacob Elordi) as he is picked up by a celebrity animal handler, Jim (out actor and producer Zachary Quinto), on a desolate stretch of Route 66 with priceless cargo in tow: Jim’s chimpanzee, Spanky, an American TV darling. As stress between Bobby and Jim rises and their fiery personalities combust, the road only becomes more treacherous the farther they go. Watch He Went That Way on demand now!
3.) Juno Films has acquired the rights to queer genre-bender Playland. Set in Boston’s oldest and most notorious gay bar, Playland Café, an eclectic ensemble of LGBTQ performers pay homage to pioneering queer spaces whose legacies cannot be erased. Find the trailer below!
4.) Bisexual actress Bella Thorne is making her feature directorial debut with Color Your Hurt, the true story of a gay man growing up in the bible belt. Based on Thorne’s original screenplay and short film entitled Unsettled, the movie is set to begin shooting in the Midwest and Italy this spring. In more film news, out actor Lukas Gage is starring in Paramount’s forthcoming Smile sequel. Though plot details remain under wraps, the untitled horror thriller is set for release on October 18, 2024.

5.) Max has dropped the official trailer for the third season of GLAAD Media Award-nominated comedy series Sort Of . In the final chapter, non-binary millennial Sabi Mehboob (out creator Bilal Baig) comes to terms with feelings of grief. Without the constraints of living up to their father’s expectations, Sabi experiences an unexpected sense of freedom, confronting big questions about their identity and life choices. Watch the season three premiere January 18 on Max!
6.) The first trailer of Peacock’s upcoming dating series Couple to Throuple has been released. Hosted by Scott Evans and guided by sex and relationship expert Shamyra Howard, the show follows four curious couples as they explore the world of polyamory and bring a lucky third partner into their relationship. At the end of their stay at a tropical resort, the couples must decide if they want to remain a throuple, go home as they arrived, or leave separately. Catch the first batch of three episodes on February 8 for triple the fun!
7.) Amazon MGM Studios has signed an exclusive first-look series and film deal with lesbian Emmy Award-winning director Nneka Onuorah. The Nigerian-American filmmaker, producer, and activist has been nominated for “Outstanding Documentary” at the GLAAD Media Awards twice: in 2017 for The Same Difference, about internalized homophobia within the Black lesbian community, and in 2022 for The Legend of the Underground, about Nigerian youth challenging discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws. 8.) Out superstar and rapper Lil Nas X has officially entered his “Christian era” with the release of his comeback single “J Christ;” check out the official music video below! Additionally, gay singer-songwriter and rapper Kayne the Lovechild has released a music video to his latest track “Roll Call,” paying homage to his Bronx hometown.
9.) The full Mean Girls soundtrack dropped today, featuring songs from queer stars Reneé Rapp and Auli’i Cravalho! In anticipation of the film, fans have also been treated to an official music video for Rapp’s “Not My Fault” single, ft. out artist Megan Thee Stallion (watch below), as well as the audio video for “World Burn.” In more music news, bisexual Grammy-winner Kali Uchis released her new Spanish-language album Orquídeas; check out the music video for single “Tu Corazón es Mío,” which unveils her first pregnancy announcement with Don Toliver!
10.) Queer talent and programs stole the show at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards this week! LGBTQ-centric winners include The Last of Us (8 wins), The Bear (4), The White Lotus (4), Beef (3), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2), RuPaul’s Drag Race (2), Saturday Night Live (2), Ted Lasso (2), We’re Here (2), Queer Eye, The Traitors, Only Murders in the Building and more! 11.) In other award show news, the Annie Award nominations have been released with queer film Nimona leading the pack at nine nods. Additional LGBTQ-centric nominations include Big Mouth, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and more; find the full list. The People’s Choice Awards have also revealed their film, tv and music nominees. LGBTQ-inclusive programs include The Color Purple, Scream VI, The Last of Us, Abbott Elementary, Never Have I Ever, Only Murders in the Building, The Bear, Ginny & Georgia, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Drew Barrymore Show, and more. LGBTQ artists received several nods: America Ferrera, Bowen Yang, Bella Ramsey, Ayo Edebiri, Billie Eilish, Matt Bomer, Chrishell Stause, Anetra, Sasha Colby, RuPaul, Miley Cyrus, Anitta, Kali Uchis, Janelle Monáe, Megan Thee Stallion, Wanda Sykes, among others!
