Sarah Huckabee Sanders
47th Governor of Arkansas
31st White House Press Secretary of Arkansas
- Updated: May 7, 2024
—Praised Alabama’s state Department of Finance and Administration’s new rule that it will no longer allow residents to use “X” instead of male or female on state-issued driver’s licenses or identification cards. This is a reversal of a policy that had been in place since 2010.
—Intended to insult influencer Dylan Mulvaney and Bud Light with a transphobic tweet.
—Claimed in her announcement for governor: “I took on the media, the radical left and their ‘cancel culture,’ and I won.” Sanders set records for avoiding the media, according to The Washington Post: “On her watch, the principal function of a press secretary—representing the White House in media briefings—all but ceased to exist. The White House set a record in January for the longest stretch in modern history without a news briefing, 41 days. It then set a record, 42 days, in March, followed by a third streak, reaching 94 days….”
—Sanders spread misinformation as White House press secretary, including defending President Trump’s tweeted ban of transgender military members: “This is a very expensive and disruptive policy and based on consultations he’s had with his national security team came to the conclusion that it erodes military readiness and cohesion and made the decision based on that… it is based on a military decision.” It was widely reported that the tweeted ban took military leaders by surprise. No evidence was produced to support Sanders’ claim that transgender military service erodes readiness or cohesion.
—Defended the Trump administration’s support of LGBTQ discrimination, including fighting to the Supreme Court to deny service to LGBTQ customers. Sanders was asked: “The lawyer for the solicitor general’s office for the administration said today in the Supreme Court if it would be legal, possible for a baker to put a sign in his window saying we don’t bake cakes for gay weddings. Does the president agree that that would be OK?” ”The president certainly supports religious liberty and that’s something he talked about during the campaign and has upheld since taking office,” Sanders replied. When pressed on whether that included support for signs that deny service to gay people, Sanders responded, “I believe that would include that.”
—Served as spokesperson for the American Principles Fund, a Super PAC that has attacked candidates for not speaking out strongly enough against marriage equality. The Fund is a spinoff of the American Principles Project, a conservative organization founded by National Organization For Marriage (NOM) cofounder and Federal Marriage Amendment author Robert George. The Fund has been largely financed by Sean Fieler, a major NOM donor. The American Principles Fund placed ads targeting Wyoming Senate candidate Liz Cheney, who opposed marriage equality, and whose sister is an out lesbian.
—Threatened pro-LGBTQ candidates that their support was on “the wrong side” and “could be fatal”: “Jobs and economy and spending are still the most important, but a candidate’s position on social issues such as life and marriage sends an extremely strong message about their values. That’s why taking the wrong side could be fatal.”
—Framed marriage equality and other social matters as an “attack” on “values”: “The unilateral truce on social issues within the GOP is bad for our party and wrong for our country—our core values are under attack, and we will stand for those who stand for what’s right,” she said in a statement.
—Shared a Facebook post in which an anti-LGBTQ writer criticizes football player Michael Sam for coming out as gay, saying the author made “great observations.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
