Kellyanne Conway
Senior Counselor to President Trump
—Falsely claimed that Donald Trump was “the first president to start as president approving of gay marriage.” As a candidate in 2016, Donald Trump told Fox News that he would “strongly consider” appointing justices to the United States Supreme Court who would overturn Obergefell v. Hodges.
—Said the Equality Act contains a “poison pill in it that could harm other people.”
—Along with President Trump, Kellyanne Conway spoke at the Family Reseach Council‘s Values Voter Summit, a convening of fringe groups united around discrimination against LGBTQ people.
—Delivered the keynote address at the Family Leadership Summit, an event hosted by Iowa’s leading anti-LGBTQ group, The FAMiLY Leader.
—Referred to a PBS kids’ show that featured lesbian parents as one of the “outside, external influences corrupting [kids’] minds and their bodies.”
—Referred to marriage equality rulings as an attempt to “redefine” family to be “whatever feels cool.”
—Claimed “the Left has used abortion to hijack the Democratic Party, direct its resources, and expand its agenda into other areas debasing the sanctity of human life,” adding that Democrats who want to “show their true colors” can “buy a hybrid car. Burn a bra. Slap on a bumper sticker that brags, ‘I killed my baby.’“
—Compared discussion of Mary Cheney’s sexual orientation to someone saying “Your daughter is a slut,” or “We want you to open up the divorce records.”
—Dismissed critics of Governor Sarah Palin’s policy proposals as “spinster childless columnists,” further suggesting that these critics hate her because “she lost all her baby weight.”
—Suggested political correctness is going to cause plane crashes: “And in fact, what starts out as maybe the person doesn’t speak English, getting — putting mayonnaise instead of mustard as you requested on your sandwich is one day going to blossom into two air traffic controllers who don’t speak great English because political correctness has made us appoint them to those positions. They’re going to have two planes crashing in the sky.”
—Used the racially-loaded phrase “back of the bus” to refer to President Obama theoretically running as a vice president on a 2008 Clinton presidential ticket.
—Claimed “revulsion toward men” is “part and parcel of the feminist movement.”
—Once said that her politics made “Ayn Rand look like a leftist.”
—Suggested that mothers should not take jobs outside the house.
—Claimed “gay issues ‘are not important to Americans’”: “Conservative pollster Kellyanne Conway complained that the media skips over gun-rights stories for its various pet causes, including reporting on gays. Gay issues “are not important to Americans,” Conway said. The media, she added, has somehow forced changes in the public school curriculum that has resulted in an ignorant public. “They’re so worried now about how many mommies Heather has that (the teacher) runs out of time” to teach basic civic lessons.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
