David Perdue
Former U.S. Senator from Georgia
- Updated: April 21, 2023
—After Georgians voted in record numbers, including record number of LGBTQ residents, in the 2020 general election, Sen. Perdue baselessly criticized the state’s election without examples of any wrongdoing. This was an apparent attempt to flatter outgoing President Trump while casting doubt on the democratic process. President-elect Biden won Georgia with nearly 2.5 million votes, the first Democratic presidential nominee to win the state since 1992.
—Mispronounced then mocked the name of his Senate colleague and candidate for Vice President, Kamala Harris, who Georgians elected as the nation’s first female, first Black and first Indian-American in the White House.
—Voted to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court even as Americans were already voting on the next president and Senate. Barrett’s anti-LGBTQ record includes serving as a trustee at a school that discriminated against LGBTQ families and teachers. Barrett had multiple paid speaking events with the anti-LGBTQ group Alliance Defending Freedom.
—Campaign ad rated “false” when it says he supports healthcare coverage of pre-existing conditions. Sen. Perdue has repeatedly voted against the Affordable Care Act, which provides health care coverage to 450,000 Georgians.
—Campaign deleted campaign ad featuring an oversize nose on Jewish challenger Jon Ossoff, prompting charges of anti-Semitism.
—Voted to confirm Judge Andrew Brasher to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court in Atlanta. Brasher has called same-sex marriage “harmful to children” and has worked with the Alliance Defending Freedom. More than 4,100 same-sex couples are raising children in Georgia, according to data from Family Equality.
—Attended classified Senate briefing on the pending coronavirus pandemic, then invested in companies that make personal protective equipment. Sen. Perdue has been previously investigated for other stock trades timed to information he learned as a U.S. Senator.
—Votes have earned him a 100% rating by anti-LGBTQ groups Family Research Council Action and Family Policy Alliance.
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
