One could argue that media tells the story of a culture, which is one of the reasons why it is so important for LGBTQ+ people to be included in the stories that appear in all forms of entertainment media as well as journalism. Not only do we feel seen, but it helps our families and friends know us better. If, that is, the stories are told well. It’s a pleasure to share with you some very well-told stories: the nominees for the 33rd Annual GLAAD Media Award in Spanish-Language scripted series and digital and multimedia journalism, as well as a special recognition.
Spanish-language morning shows join #SpiritDay, Programas matutinos en español se unen a #SpiritDay
¡Qué lindo se ve el mundo de morado! Que alegría estamos sintiendo hoy en GLAAD al ver tantos elencos de programas…
This year, many influential Latine celebrities joined #SpiritDay to stand against bullying. Celebs like Thalia, Ana Maria Polo, Juan Pablo Espinosa, and Juan Pablo Di Pace have already gone purple. So have the casts of the Q Agenda on LATV, and the casts of hugely popular Spanish-Language morning shows Despierta América on Univision and Hoy Día on Telemundo. The shows have shared messages of support for LGBTQ youth and done segments on Spirit Day that help educate their millions of viewers on the need to combat bullying in schools, at home and everywhere.
One again this year it was fantastic to see the casts of leading Spanish-language shows go purple for #SpiritDay. The casts of the morning show Despierta América on Univision and of Un Nuevo Día on Telemundo all rocked purple again this year, as did the hosts of Primer Impacto and The Zoo on LATV. Spanish-language streamer Pantaya joined #SpiritDay and turned various channels purple.

One of the best things about working at GLAAD is getting to celebrate the smart, funny, moving AND LGBTQ-inclusive stories we are seeing—in English and en Español. Over the years, I have seen LGBTQ representation slowly increase—and sometimes, unfortunately, decrease again the next year. We have a lot more to do, and the work goes on!
Today we celebrate the steps forward, like the existence of a scripted show or novela from Mexico centered around two young men in love: El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca which won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Scripted Television Series at the GLAAD Media Awards July 30.
This Sunday, May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. In Mexico, Libera Tu Orgullo (Release Your Pride) will bring together activists and celebrities for an hour-long program of performances and messages of support en español. Also on Sunday, in Puerto Rico LGBTQ activists will be joined by singers Ricky Martin and Olga Tañón to remember those lost to anti-LGBTQ violence and to call for safety for all Puerto Ricans.
What to watch en español: GLAAD Media Award nominated couples like Juliantina, Aristemo and more!
One of the best things about working at GLAAD is getting to celebrate the smart, funny, moving AND LGBTQ-inclusive stories we are seeing—in English and en Español. Sadly, this year, because of the worldwide health crisis, we are not able to announce award recipients as scheduled during the GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies. We will be announcing how award recipients will be announced soon. But right now we can enjoy many of the great shows and films and journalistic pieces nominated for awards. With so many of us spending evenings (and days) at home, this may be the perfect time to catch up on TV shows and movies and journalism you may have missed.
