One of the best things about working at GLAAD is getting to celebrate the smart, funny, moving AND LGBTQ-inclusive stories we are seeing—in English and en Español. Over the years, I have seen LGBTQ representation slowly increase—and sometimes, unfortunately, decrease again the next year. We have a lot more to do, and the work goes on!
Today we celebrate the steps forward, like the existence of a scripted show or novela from Mexico centered around two young men in love: El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca which won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Scripted Television Series at the GLAAD Media Awards July 30. The leads of this show, Emilio Osorio Marcos and Joaquín Bondoni are so charming that fans fell in love with them. They even won GLAAD’s first ever TV Fan Favorite Award!
Aristemo forever! In this category there were two other couples who are so wildly popular in Latin America and Spain that fans combined their names: Juliana (Bárbara López) and Valentina (Macarena Achaga) who became “Juliantina” and Omar (Omar Ayuso) and Ander (Arón Piper) from Élite who became “Omander.” Their passionate and super supportive fans help prove that audiences are hungry for and very appreciative of stories that reflect the world in all of its beautiful diversity.
Watch and support all of the nominees in the category: Amar a Muerte (Univision) El Corazón Nunca Se Equivoca (Univision) Élite (Netflix) Los Espookys (HBO) El Juego de las Llaves (Pantaya)
In other categories we celebrated the excellent journalism of longer and shorter form pieces. In the Spanish-language Newsmagazine category, two segments tied for the win. They are “Después de Stonewall” on CNN en Español, a 60-minute piece that looked at LGBTQ life in various countries and through various lenses, and “Orgullo” on the morning show, Despierta América on Univision. In that series, reporter Luis Sandoval interviewed several LGBTQ people including Armando Correa, Editor of People en Español, and several other folks proudly making a difference.
In the category of Best Television Interview, the highly-rated morning show Un Nuevo Día won for a segment by Rashel Díaz on coming out of the closet from the point of view of various individuals who shared their experiences—the challenges but also, refreshingly, the joy that came from being able to be out. For the Outstanding News Segment category, we celebrated a series from Noticiero Univision 33 in Arizona on families with same-sex parents. This important news program, in a large and significant Latinx community, often strives for LGBTQ inclusion.
In the Spanish-Language Digital Journalism category GQ México won for an excellent profile of openly gay skater Jorge Luis Martínez by Mario Villagrán. In the Digital Journalism Multi-Media David Casasús of EFE won for the story, “América a Fondo: Brigitte Baptiste, el Rostro de la (bio) Diversidad,” a rich video profile of respected scientist Brigitte Baptiste, who is trans, which ran in BBC Mundo.
Thank you to all of writers and producers and reporters, editors, videographers and musicians in this country and in Mexico, Central and Latin America and in Spain who go the extra mile to tell inclusive stories! A big shout out to community members who tell their stories in media—not always easy to do. So many Latinx moms and dads and trans leaders, with whom we have the pleasure of working, told their stories in everything from CNNE in New York to Telemundo 44 and Arizona’s Noticiero Univision, Los Angeles’ Univision 34, to the big morning shows Despierta América and Un Nuevo Día.
Visit glaad.org/awards to check out the many amazing nominees in all categories, including Matthew López for his Broadway play The Inheritance, which won the GLAAD Media Award! And many others. Most certainly worth enjoying and celebrating are the Spanish-language films (and one in Portuguese) nominated for Outstanding Film – Limited Release. They are: · End of the Century · The Heiresses · Pain and Glory · Sócrates · This is Not Berlin.
