TOTAL NUMBER OF NOMINEES: 151
(132 English, 19 Spanish-language)
TOTAL NUMBER OF GLAAD MEDIA AWARDS CATEGORIES: 27
(22 English, 5 Spanish-language)
CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION:
GLAAD Media Awards nominees are selected using the following four criteria:
- Fair, Accurate, and Inclusive Representations – Rather than portraying the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community using broad stereotypes, the project deals with the characters or themes in a fair, accurate, and multi-dimensional manner. Inclusive speaks to the importance of having the diversity of the LGBTQ community represented in our nominees.
- Boldness and Originality – The project breaks new ground by exploring LGBTQ subject matter in non-traditional ways, and handles the LGBTQ content in a fresh and original manner.
- Impact – The media project dramatically increases the cultural dialogue about LGBTQ issues, or reaches an audience that is not regularly exposed to LGBTQ images and issues. The project has significant cultural impact.
- Overall Quality – A project of extremely high quality adds significance to the images and issues portrayed and draws more viewers or readers to the material. Fair, accurate, and inclusive images may be weakened when they are part of a poor-quality project.
FACTS ABOUT THE NOMINEES:
- Streaming services received 11 nominations. Netflix’s nine nominations include Dear White People, One Day at a Time, Sense8, Queer Eye, Hannah Gadsby’s acclaimed special Nanette, as well as a nomination for Elite in Outstanding Spanish-Language Scripted Television Series. Amazon earned a nomination A Very English Scandal. While Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale received its second nomination.
- Several nominees featured outstanding portrayals of lesbian and bisexual women. Lesbian or bisexual female characters feature prominently in Blockers, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Deadpool 2, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Favourite, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, One Day at a Time, Black Lightning, Vida, Supergirl, and Wynonna Earp.
- Media interest in transgender stories remains strong. Nominees featuring transgender people include: Saturday Church, Billions, Grey’s Anatomy, Pose, Star, Supergirl, Sense8, Call Her Ganda, My House, and I Am Jazz. Three of the Outstanding Music Artist nominees are transgender: Kim Petras, Shea Diamond, and Sophie.
- Media representations of the bisexual community are infrequent and often sensationalized or inaccurate, but this year saw several nomination-worthy media projects, including: The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Disobedience, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Schitt’s Creek, Grey’s Anatomy, Star, Shadowhunters, Wynonna Earp and Sense8.
- GLAAD presents non-competitive Special Recognition Awards to media projects that do not fit into one of the existing GLAAD Media Awards categories. This year, GLAAD is acknowledging: Nanette, Hannah Gadsby’s critically acclaimed comedy special on Netflix; House of Mamis, an online docuseries about the Mexico City ballroom scene from INTOMore.com; and the documentary TransMilitary, which premiered on Logo and showcases the lives of several transgender Americans in the U.S. military.

News nominees featuring people living with HIV include: “The Latinx Drag Queens Spearheading HIV Activism on the Border” by Paola Ramos (Vice.com) and “He Took a Drug to Prevent AIDS.
