Twitter announced tonight that it is permanently banning Donald Trump from using the platform. Yesterday, GLAAD called for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to move from temporary suspensions and indefinite bans to permanent ones.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis responded to Twitter’s announcement on the platform:
“Thank you Twitter for doing the right thing and permanently suspending Donald Trump. GLAAD urges all social media platforms to follow suit. We will be watching and holding these platforms accountable. Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous, as was proved at the Capitol this week. Removing his ability to amplify misinformation and encourage further violence is a necessary step for the safety of all Americans.”
GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project has been tracking the Trump administration’s attacks against the LGBTQ community – 181 and counting in negative policies and dangerous rhetoric over the last four years: /tap/donald-trump
In July 2017, Pres. Trump tweeted that transgender people should be banned from military service, an announcement that took the Pentagon by surprise. His administration has deployed multiple federal departments to roll back protections against discrimination for LGBTQ people including the Department of Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice, including arguing in three different Supreme Court cases for the right to discriminate.
GLAAD has organized a petition for supporters to sign onto our call for safety and permanently ban Donald Trump from social media platforms: /bantrump
