GLAAD STATEMENT ON PASSING OF LIARA TSAI

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization is responding to the death of Liara Tsai.

Statement from Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD:
GLAAD is saddened to hear of the tragic murder of Liara Tsai, a transgender woman living in Minnesota and working as a crisis counselor. Liara was a beloved member of the community, remembered for her welcoming spirit and celebrations of queer joy through her iconic DJ sets around the country. We send all of our love and support to those closest to Liara and to all of the lives she touched through her music. We call on the media to continue to report on Liara’s life and death accurately (resources for media available at glaad.org/reference) We join our partners at OutFront Minnesota in calling for a full investigation into Liara’s death.

OutFront Minnesota, the state’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization, shared the following on this tragedy:

“On Monday, we learned that Liara Tsai was killed. Liara was a DJ and producer, had served as a crisis counselor, and was a beloved member of the trans community here in Minnesota. We mourn her loss and urge a full investigation of her death. We extend our deepest sympathies to those closest to her; and to all who found connection through her music. We hope that Liara will be remembered for the music she created and the joy she brought to community spaces.

LGBTQ+ individuals experience violence all too frequently—even here in Minnesota; and we commit ourselves to the work of ensuring that all our communities can live full and authentic lives.”
