GLAAD SHARES STATEMENT FROM LOCAL ADVOCATES ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY OF MURDERED TRANSGENDER TEENAGER, PAULY LIKENS
(Monday, July 8, 2024) GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, is sharing a statement from advocates on behalf of the mother and aunt of Pauly Likens (she/her), a transgender teenager found brutally murdered and dismembered in Sharon, Pennsylvania.
Statement from Pamela Ladner (she/her), President of LGBTQIA+ Alliance Shenango Valley and Shenango Valley Pride Picnic:
“Pauly was a 14-year-old transgender female who was loving, full of life, and selfless. Everyone she met was touched by her sheer existence. She loved nature, getting her nails done, and shopping. Pauly had aspirations of being a Park Ranger like her Aunt Liz.Our entire community mourns this loss of young life along with Pauly’s family. She was taken violently, senselessly, and way too soon.
Pauly’s family asks for privacy during this time and all comments or questions directed towards local agencies.”
Statement from GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis (she/her):
“The death of Pauly Likens is a tragedy for her family and the entire LGBTQ community of northwest Pennsylvania and everywhere. Every young person deserves safety and acceptance of who they are. Transgender teenagers are at exceptional risk and need our protection. Our thoughts are with Pauly’s family, and all in the LGBTQ community. We will never stop fighting for a world where they are safe and free as their authentic selves.”
According to the Pennsylvania Youth Congress, Pauly is at least the 20th murder of a transgender or gender-expansive Pennsylvanian in the past 10 years, and the youngest. A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged.
Public vigil:
Saturday, July 13th 7pm
LGBTQIA+ Alliance Shenango Valley
87 Stambaugh Ave.
