QUOTES
Introduced by Geena Davis, GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, said:
“We are targeted because too many people don’t know us or understand who we are. And what you don’t know, you fear. Right-wing politicians and talking heads are rushing to fill that knowledge gap with baseless rhetoric that goes unchecked by news organizations and unregulated by social media companies. They’re using fear to get clicks and score political points. So I ask you: are we going to let them get away with it?”
Christina Aguilera, received GLAAD’s Advocate for Change Award and was introduced by Club Q Survivor, Michael Anderson, saying in part: “As I continue my career I’m constantly inspired by all the HIV activists, trans right leaders, and LGBTQ leaders who work tirelessly to push back against conformity and injustice. … We all need to raise our voices if we want to live in a world that’s free of discrimination, hate and violence.”
Bad Bunny, honored with this year’s Vanguard Award, introduced by Ricky Martin, accepted the award in a heartfelt speech, accepting in Spanish: “Lo primero que quiero es darte gracias a GLAAD por este reconocimiento. Gracias a toda la comunidad LGBTQ por abrazarme, por quererme en la manera que lo hacen, y por inspirarme también … Yo creo que cuando tienes un buen corazón, y cuando das amor, eso es lo que recibes pa atrás. Y eso es lo que he querido hacer todo este tiempo con mi música, con lo que representó, con el espacio, con mi concierto, con mis shows, con todo lo que hago, yo lo único que quiero eso. Dar amor y recibir amor.”
Translated: “The first thing I want to do is say thank you to GLAAD for this recognition. Thank you to the whole LGBTQ community for embracing me, for loving me the way that they do, and for inspiring me too. … I believe that when you have a good heart, and you give love, that’s what you receive back, and that’s what I’ve wanted to do all this time with my music, with what I represent, with my space, with my concert, with my shows, with all that I do, that’s all I want to do. Give love and receive love.”
Jeremy Pope, upon acceptance of the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, introduced by Gabrielle Union: “As we continue to build and fight in the community we know that we are targeted. Our trans brothers and sisters, our rights are at stake. And at times I find my heart wrestling with how to keep the faith. It’s rooms like this that remind me of the power of this community. How we will rise time and time again for each other. Freedom. Liberation. Intentional love and support that runs longer than the Underground Railroad my ancestors ran upon. I refuse to use my time on this earth scared or living in shame. And I ask you to do the same.”
