DONALD TRUMP, TUCKER CARLSON, J.K. ROWLING, NIKKI HALEY, MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE, BEN SHAPIRO, CANDACE OWENS, KAYLEIGH MCENANY AMONG 200 NAMES INCLUDED IN LAUNCH OF “GLAAD ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT”

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, today launched the GLAAD Accountability Project, an extensive research catalog of more than 200 public figures who spread misinformation about LGBTQ people and issues in the media.

The GLAAD Accountability Project incorporates and expands GLAAD’s highly-referenced Trump Accountability Project, which detailed nearly 200 anti-LGBTQ policies deployed by the Trump administration in its four years in office.

“This new project spotlights public figures who use their power and media platforms to spread misinformation or dangerous rhetoric about LGBTQ people,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “Many of the more than 200 names featured in The GLAAD Accountability Project are familiar faces who regularly play prominent roles in shaping the national conversation about LGBTQ people, but their history of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and actions often fly under the radar. As journalists write stories or producers book guests, the project will be a valuable tool to check their history of harmful rhetoric or actions against LGBTQ people and add context and LGBTQ angles to their pieces.”

The Project includes former Pres. Trump and administration appointees and staff, many of whom are looking for new roles in media and public life, but have not reconciled their history in one of the most anti-LGBTQ administrations ever. Nearly 100 elected officials and 90 media hosts and commentators are included along with potential candidates for office:

• Senator Ted Cruz, who cosponsored a bill to ban transgender athletes claiming they are a threat to women’s sports, days after he voted to object to the 2020 election results leading to the deadly siege at the Capitol. Sen. Cruz repeatedly fought marriage equality, and supported accused child predator and anti-LGBTQ Senate candidate Roy Moore.

• Senator Josh Hawley, who filed an amicus brief at the U.S. Supreme Court for the right to discriminate against LGBTQ foster parents and also supported rioters at the Capitol.

• Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who was removed from Congressional committees due to her support of violent extremism, cosponsored an anti-transgender bill and used Twitter to attack a Congressional colleague’s transgender child.

• Writers including J.K. Rowling, who has alienated fans around the world with uninformed and harmful rhetoric about transgender people; and Abigail Shrier, who appeared at a Senate hearing on The Equality Act to falsely claim trans people pose a risk to women and girls.

• Cable TV commentators like Tucker Carlson, who amplifes damaging misinformation about LGBTQ people; Rick Santorum, who continues as a cable news consultant despite his history of spreading false and harmful misinformation about LGBTQ Americans; and podcaster Ben Shapiro, who uses his platforms to attack LGBTQ people and issues.

• Candidates and potential candidates for elected office, including former Trump press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who misled the American people as she defended the former president’s anti-LGBTQ actions; former governor and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who repeats false talking points about transgender girls as she courts the Trump base; and Donald Trump, Junior, who has spread misinformation about trans people in his book and speeches.

GLAAD will continually update the GLAAD Accountability Project with additional research and alert journalists and the public to the record as needed as LGBTQ issues are reported.
