New York, New York – Sunday, May 12, 2024 – GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, announced recipients for the remaining 18 of this year’s 33 categories at the 35th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York. Jennifer Hudson received the Excellence in Media Award, introduced by Laverne Cox. Orville Peck received the Vito Russo Award, presented by Jennifer Lawrence. The ceremony, which was held at the New York Hilton Midtown, was hosted by Ross Matthews.

The evening also featured live performances by Loren Allred and Scott Hoying, of Pentatonix.

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, introduced by Attorney General of New York Letitia James, said in part: “Ten years ago when I started at GLAAD, It was a much different landscape…And now we have the urgent need to protect it all. Our latest poll shows that more than half of American voters are turned off by candidates who are anti-trans. Hating us is becoming a losing proposition. We have to keep telling our stories, raising our voices, pushing back on the rhetoric.”

Jennifer Hudson, introduced by Laverne Cox, said in part: “Do y’all [the LGBTQ community] know how beautiful you are? Do you know your stories deserve to be told? You guys make me feel safe. Loved my whole life. Welcome. And so therefore, it is my mission to do the same.”

Orville Peck, introduced by Jennifer Lawrence, said in part: “I’ve never understood why country music has historically been a place that hasn’t felt welcoming to LGBTQ+ people. The kind of country songs I grew up loving were often about heartbreak, heartache, loss, solitude, disappointment, and longing. Feelings that can at times be big parts of our experiences growing up queer. … That’s the world that drew me in with its vivid stories. That’s the country I always saw, and maybe the reason it was so clear for me that I belonged there. Whether that meant being invited to the table or walking up and grabbing a seat myself.”

Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones, introduced by the cast of We’re Here, made a surprise appearance and said in part: “We will never be silenced. If they turn off our microphone, we’ll bring a megaphone. If they try [to] ban Pride and drag, we’ll show [up] even bigger and stronger. And show up in rural communities and let them know that we are a force to be reckoned with because we represent a new South and a new nation.”

●      Over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced across the country this past legislative session, the majority of which target transgender Americans’ access to health care and LGBTQ youth’s freedom and equal opportunity at school.

●      This means that a majority of anti-LGBTQ bills proposed in 2024 specifically sought to harm transgender youth by making it difficult or impossible to live safely and free as their authentic selves.

●      So far, more than 200 of these bills have been defeated, while approximately two dozen have been signed into law.

●      Federal courts in at least seven states had ruled against bans on health care for transgender people or blocked them from being enacted as of early 2024, including rulings by three Trump-nominated justices.

●      Current Gallup polling indicates record-high support for the freedom to marry (71%), and nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people (84%). More than 7% of U.S. adults are out as LGBTQ, including 20% of Gen Z, the most out generation in history. A projected 14% of voters will be out as LGBTQ by 2030.
