Amazon Prime’s gay rom-com Red, White & Royal Blue is a hit, ascending the streaming charts to be the #1 movie worldwide on Prime Video. The groundbreaking LGBTQ film is already among Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedy films of all time!
Amazon has also seen a huge surge of new Prime membership sign-ups directly correlated to the film’s release, proving that queer stories are not only good for business, they are stories that audiences want to see more of.
Red, White & Royal Blue, which follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (played by Uma Thurman with a molasses-like southern accent) and his BFF (Best Frenemy Forever), Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) has become an instant classic.
This film adaptation of the beloved novel with the same name is being praised by audiences and critics everywhere. With a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it has been deemed “Certified Fresh.” Additionally, the New York Times bestselling novel by Casey McQuiston has moved to #14 on the Amazon Best Sellers list.

GLAAD’s Vice President of Communications and Talent, Anthony Allen Ramos stated: “The tremendous initial success of Prime Video’s ‘Red, White & Royal Blue’ sends a clear message that entertainment with LGBTQ-lead stories can be hits with audiences and by industry standards. The fact that the film is already the streamer’s third most watched romantic comedy ever and that memberships to the platform have spiked related to its premiere also prove that the fringe anti-LGBTQ activists who are attacking inclusive entertainment are both wrong from a moral sense, but also from a business sense. The impressive statistics for Matthew Lopez’s fun and smart film based on the beloved book by Casey McQuiston are clear evidence that audiences of all kinds want more stories and films like ‘Red, White & Royal Blue.'”
According to MarketCast, Red, White & Royal Blue has also ranked #1 in conversation volume for titles launching the week of August 11th. It also trended on Twitter in 32 markets globally including being the #1 trending topic of conversation in the U.S. leading into release.
“The phenomenal debut of Red, White & Royal Blue is a true testament to the entertaining and inspired storytelling led by the creative minds behind it. Matthew López, Casey McQuiston, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Ted Malawer and the entire talented filmmaking team hit it out of the park,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon MGM Studios. “We are so proud of this delightful, heartwarming film and could not be more thrilled with the response from fans–existing and new.”
The film’s director, Matthew López, is thrilled to be bringing diverse and meaningful LGBTQ representation to homes around the world. Read more about GLAAD’s interview with López here.
