What is Prop. 8?
Proposition 8, aka Prop. 8, is an anti-marriage equality ballot measure that denied California couples the freedom to marry in November, 2008. Prior to the passage of this ballot initiative, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality in May 2008.
What is the status of Prop 8 right now?
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that proponents of Prop 8 have no standing to challenge the decision of the ninth circuit court, which struck down the anti-gay ballot measure. The Supreme Court’s ruling will revert to the ninth circuit, which will overturn Prop 8. This means that committed same-sex couples in California will soon be able to marry their loved ones once again.
Does this ruling on Prop. 8 affect other states?
No, the ruling only directly affects California.
What do Californians think about marriage?
Support for marriage equality has been on the rise in California, just like the rest of the country. A recent poll by USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times revealed that 58% of registered voters in California support marriage equality, an increase of 6 points in three years. Though young people and the Bay Area in San Francisco lead the way in support, support among those 65 years old and up has increased 11 points in the last three years. Even the Central Valley, where voters are evenly split on the issue saw a six-point jump over that time period.
