Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1.) Gay writer, comedian, and actor Julio Torres’ directorial debut Problemista hits limited theaters today! The surreal adventure film highlights the pitfalls of inequity in New York City and the U.S. Immigration system through the story of Alejandro (Torres), an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador who works for an erratic art world outcast, played by Academy Award-winner Tilda Swinton. The LGBTQ-centric cast also includes out actors James Scully, Spike Einbinder, Larry Owens, Kelly McCormack, and Megan Stalter. Catch Problemista in New York and Los Angeles theaters before the feature goes wide March 22!
2.) A24 has released the official trailer for the upcoming horror flick I See the TV Glow, starring out actors Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine. From non-binary director Jane Schoenbrun, the film blurs the lines between reality and television. Suburban teen Owen and his queer classmate Maddy bond over a cult favorite supernatural TV show until it is mysteriously canceled, causing their view of reality to crumble in the pale glow of the television. Out performers Phoebe Bridgers, Emma Portner, and Lindsey Jordan, round out the star-studded cast. Find the trailer below and watch I See the TV Glow in theaters May 3.
3.) The GLAAD Media Award-nominated documentary Beyond the Aggressives: 25 Years Later is heading to Showtime and Paramount+ on March 30! The film picks up two decades after Daniel Peddle’s groundbreaking 2005 doc centering masc-presenting queer people of color in NYC. In the sequel, Peddle revists four of the original subjects—Kisha, Trevon, Octavio and Chin—who share an array of their personal triumphs and challenges over the past 25 years. Interwoven with fresh voices from the wider BIPOC community, the film delves into how much language, culture, and visibility of the trans community has evolved, and grapples with the complexities of gender identity, expectations and expression. 4.) Bisexual Kohala native actress Auli’i Cravalho is officially reprising the titular voice of Moana in the upcoming sequel. In Moana 2, Moana journey’s to the far sea of Oceania after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors. Don’t miss Moana 2 in theaters November 27!

5.) Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery. The season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S Discovery—including gay couple Paul Stamets (out actor Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (out actor Wilson Cruz), and non-binary human Adira Tal (out non-binary actor Blu del Barrio)—uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy. In search of an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries, the crew discovers dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves. Find the trailer below and stream the first two episodes of the final season April 4 with new episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays.
6.) Prime Video has picked up gay comedian and actor Benito Skinner’s upcoming series Overcompensating. Inspired by Skinner’s own life, the college-set ensemble comedy tells the chaotic journey of Benny, a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes friends with Carmen, a high school outsider who aims to fit in at any cost. The show ultimately explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are. Stay tuned for more information!

7.) Gay interior designer Jeremiah Brent is joining the Fab 5 in Queer Eye’s upcoming ninth season! The design expert founded Jeremiah Brent Design and lifestype brand Atrio while transforming homes and commercial properties alongside his husband Nate Berkus. In the season, the crew heads to Las Vegas to transform the lives of everyday people from the inside out. Stream season eight on Netflix today and keep an eye out for more Queer Eye updates!

8.) Max debuted the official teaser for the third season of hit comedy Hacks. The streamer also released its all-star lineup of guest stars, including out actor, writer, and producer Dan Bucantinsky. Season three picks up as Deborah is riding high off the success of her standup special while Ava pursues new opportunities back in Los Angeles. Watch the teaser below and stream the first two episodes May 2!
9.) Trailblazing trans multi-hyphenate Laverne Cox has released the second installment of her TripHopera trilogy, “Gretchen: A TripHopera Pt. 2.” The song is a futuristic reimagining of Franz Schubert’s Lied “Gretchen am Spinnrade,” subverting the mythical 18th century story of Faust and Gretchen. 9.) The official music video for acclaimed lesbian artist Katie Pruitt’s new song “All My Friends” debuted this week. Watch the music video below and pre-order Mantras, due April 5! Finally, out singer-songwriter and musician Lawrence Rothman released a new song “LAX,” featuring Amanda Shires, off their highly anticipated new album The Plow That Broke the Plains, out April 26. 10.) Two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon is joining Off-Broadway’s Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey beginning April 2! She will also reprise her role in the Broadway revival of Chicago this June, making her the first drag queen to play the role in a major production.

11.) Searchlight’s queer romantic drama All of Us Strangers won big at the 15th Annual Dorian Awards, by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, taking home three top prizes! Magnolia’s GLAAD Media Award-nominated documentary Kokomo City and Neon’s Oscar-nominated film Anatomy of a Fall both scored two awards in the documentary and non-English language categories, respectively. Many LGBTQ stars were also recognized this year, including Lily Gladstone for their performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, and Ayo Edebiri for the “We’re Wilde About You!” Rising Star Award. 12.) The wait is over for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and it’s finally time for players to get Cloud Strife and the party back together in this epic open-world RPG. Along with having refreshed character arcs, graphics, gameplay, and storylines, this beloved remake is also full of casual queer representation, and exploring the Planet reveals a thriving LGBTQ community that reminds players just exactly what Cloud and his group are fighting for. Continue the journey and save the world in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, available now on PS5.
13.) Daviel Shy’s queer episodic series The Lovers has set special West Coast sneak peek screening events, with proceeds going towards post-production efforts. In the project, a retired dungeon owner, internet astrologer, erotic cinema company, fitness-witch, infected host of supernnatural stirrings, and nostalgic sex worker, all navigate their way through confusing new choices in 2020 quarantine. Watch the first four episodes of The Lovers in Los Angeles on March 9 at Whammy! or in San Francisco March 13 at The Roxie Cinema.
