The “greatest play of a generation” is going to be great just a little bit longer. Cole Escola‘s critically acclaimed play Oh, Mary! is extending its run for a third time, now on Broadway through June 28, 2025.
Escola is set to bow out of the role of the unhinged Mary Todd Lincoln on January 19, 2025 and Emmy-nominated actress Betty Gilpin will don the titular tendrils starting January 21 for a limited engagement through March 16.
Oh, Mary! is a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd in the weeks leading up to her husband — and President of the United States — Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. While navigating unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and myriad of wildly suppressed desires Mary Todd wants to bring her forgotten hopes and dreams to the light — despite her what her stressed-out husband thinks.
The play also stars Fire Island actors Conrad Ricamora and James Scully as well as Bianca Leigh (Transamerica, Disclosure). This also marks the Broadway debut for Tony Macht.
Oh, Mary! made its Off-Broadway debut in February 2024 before making its way to the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway. It’s limited run was extended not once, but twice due to popular demand.
This extended run is well deserved as Oh, Mary! has already earned writer and star Escola a Drama Desk Award, a Theatre World Award and two Outer Critic Circle Awards. Oh, Mary! marks Escola’s Broadway debut and this extension is a significant win for queer art as the play — and Escola continue to bolster LGBTQ narratives that resonate with more mainstream audiences.
