Film Independent has released its list of nominees for the 2022 Independent (Indie) Spirit Awards in film and television and there’s no shortage of amazing LGBTQ-inclusive names amongst those being honored this season. The full list of nominees was revealed Tuesday morning by Beanie Feldstein, Regina Hall, and Naomi Watts.
The Novice, an IFC Films film about a collegiate rower who will do anything to get ahead, led the pack up five nominations for its queer content, cast, and crew. The thriller is up for Best Feature, its queer director – Lauren Hadaway – is nominated for Best Director, and lead actress Isabelle Fuhrman received a Best Female Lead for portraying the film’s queer protagonist.
While not explicitly queer, dark comedy Zola, which was co-written by acclaimed queer playwright and screenwriter Jeremy O. Harris (and led in overall awards nominations, with seven nods), is also nominated for Best Feature. Additionally, Harris himself was nominated for Best Screenplay, while queer cast member Colman Domingo is in the running for Best Supporting Male.
Not to be outdone, dry comedy Together Together collected its own set of nominations: one for writer Nikole Beckwith, who is nominated for Best Screenplay, and another for comedienne Patti Harrison, who is up for Best Female Lead.
Swan Song is another film with multiple queer nominations: one for Todd Stephen in the Best Screenplay category and another for Udo Kier in the Best Male Lead category.
Olly Alexander of It’s A Sin and Murray Bartlett of HBO Max’s The White Lotus have both been nominated for Best Male Lead in a New Scripted Series. It’s A Sin also received a nomination for Best New Scripted Series.
Other queer-inclusive nominations for the Indie Awards include:
Dry comedy Shiva Baby, which is up for the John Cassavettes Award.
Writing duo Sheldon D. Brown and Matt Fifer, who are up for Best First Screenplay for Cicada.
FLEE, an animated film that tells the story of a gay Afghan refugee, is up for Best Documentary.
Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film, Parallel Mothers, and out lesbian director Celine Sciamma’s Petite Maman have both been nominated for Best International Film.
Transgender director Angelo Madsen Minax’s documentary North By Current has been nominated for Truer Than Fiction Award.
We Are Lady Parts is up for Best New Scripted Series.
Kali Reis is nominated for Best Female Lead for playing a queer woman in Catch The Fair One.
Lastly, both HBO’s The Lady and The Dale and Nuclear Family have been nominated for Best New Documentary Series.
