“It couldn’t happen here,” a belief actress Hilarie Burton Morgan is working to dispel in her Sundance TV series. True Crime Story: It Couldn’t Happen Here, is a docuseries where Burton Morgan puts a spotlight on murder cases from small towns across America.
The actress and small town advocate meets with families and locals to explore each unique story and the impact and challenges of small-town justice.
The episode tells the story of the murder of a gender-nonconforming Black teenager that remains unsolved despite pressure from family and friends – raising issues about the increase of violence, and the lack of justice for trans murder victims across the country.
“She died in a crowded party, surrounded by witnesses,” they explain in the trailer. “It just happened so fast,” a friend of the victim explains tearfully.
“This family is left here with no justice, and a lot of questions,” Burton Morgan says. “The streets knew more than the detectives,” another witness reveals.
Tune in on May 9th to find out what happens next. True Crime Story premieres Thursdays at 10pm on SundanceTV and AMC+.
