This Pride Month, New York City audiences will have the chance to experience one of the most celebrated and moving solo shows to come out of the UK in recent years.
The Olivier-nominated My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?) arrives at New York City Center for a limited run, from June 12–15, bringing with it a powerful message of unconditional love, queer joy, and the magic of self-expression.
Written and performed by non-binary British actor Rob Madge, the show is a theatrical memoir built from home videos, storytelling, and original songs by Pippa Cleary. At its heart is a tender and hilarious account of Madge’s childhood efforts to mount a full-scale Disney parade in their living room—with their supportive father gamely operating the smoke machine.
It’s a show about growing up queer, being embraced exactly as you are, and the extraordinary things that happen when a child is given the freedom to dream out loud.
After making waves at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and earning a successful West End run in London, the show now makes its U.S. debut—just in time for both Pride Month and Father’s Day.
The timing couldn’t be more meaningful: My Son’s a Queer is a love letter not only to the resilience and imagination of queer youth, but also to the quiet, powerful acts of parenting that make those identities possible. For anyone who has ever had to navigate the journey toward being seen—and for the parents, chosen family, and allies who helped them along the way—this show is an unforgettable celebration.
