The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards are officially here, and LGBTQ talent is shining bright across categories from acting and hosting to reality TV and makeup design. The annual ceremony, airing September 15 on CBS and streaming via Paramount+, continues to reflect the growing influence and impact of LGBTQ voices on television.
Among this year’s standout nominees is Bella Ramsey, recognized for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for their powerful performance as Ellie in The Last of Us. In the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, we celebrate a wave of queer excellence with nominations for Netflix (The Four Seasons) Colman Domingo, HBO MAX (Somebody Somewhere) Jeff Hiller, Apple TV + Michael Urie (Shrinking), and NBC (Saturday Night Live) Bowen Yang. Rising star Cooper Koch received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his chilling portrayal in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story.
The reality categories are also stacked with LGBTQ talent. In Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program Paramount +(RuPaul’s Drag Race) RuPaul ,Peacock (The Traitors) Alan Cumming (The Traitors), and Bravo (Top Chef) Kristen Kish are all nominated.
RuPaul’s Drag Race leads all reality series this year with 10 nominations, bringing its franchise total to 99 nominations since 2015. RuPaul now holds the record for most nominations and most consecutive nominations for Outstanding Host, and the show broke new ground with its first nomination for Outstanding Lighting Design. Drag Race also extended its record for Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, earning its ninth consecutive nomination in the category.
It’s also a landmark year for the horror-meets-drag competition series The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, which earned its first-ever Primetime Emmy nominations. The groundbreaking AMC+/Shudder series scored two nods: Outstanding Hairstyling for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program (stylist Marco Gabellini) and Outstanding Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program (for The Boulet Brothers themselves).
In other categories, LGBTQ stories continue to resonate. Will & Harper, a heartwarming trans-inclusive road trip documentary earned a nomination for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, alongside HBO Max (Pee-wee as Himself), a moving portrait of Paul Reubens’ life and legacy. Netflix’s (Arcane) was recognized with a nomination in the Outstanding Animated Program category.
