Each year, Out Magazine honors 100 LGBTQ change-makers for their achievements, accomplishments, and impact on culture and society.
Out’s Out100 is a prestigious compilation of the year’s most impactful and influential LGBTQ people and the honorees came together this week for a night to remember in Los Angeles.
Kicking off the night was comedian Margaret Cho with a passionate speech about queer youth saying, “There was a spike, 700%, for teen suicide hotlines amongst gay youth. […] It is so upsetting so we have to protect the youth. To do that we have to look happy all the time because gay kids will see you so you have to stand tall and stand proud and look happy [and] they will realize they will be able to grow up.”
At the event, actresses and singers Cynthia Erivo and Sheryl Lee Ralph both received awards for their commitment to the community.
Accepting The Advocate of The Year Award, Abbott Elementary’s Sheryl Lee Ralph shared, “I am a believer in the power of unity. The world may try to divide us, but our strength has always been in our ability to stand together, to lift one another, and to remind each other that love — at its core — is unstoppable.” The award was presented to her by her Abbott Elementary co-stars Chris Perfetti and Lisa Ann Walter.
Later in the evening, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, who recieved the Icon of the Year Award, addressed the crowd and closed out the evening by saying, “Now, I should let you get on, you deserve to enjoy this night and according to queer media, I have been all over your social media, at least that’s what I’ve heard and I don’t want you to grow too tired of me, there’s a part two on the way, and we really need to hold space for that and feel the power in that,” referring to her viral interview with journalist Tracy E. Gilchrist.
Additional honorees at the event include GLAAD’s Senior Director of Communications, Tony Morrison and Vice President of the GLAAD Media Institute, Nick Adams, Trixie Mattel, Tom Daley, Law Roach, Nina West, and Zaya Wade, who was joined by her parents Dwane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade.
More stars in attendance include Marissa Bode, Reneé Rapp, Orville Peck, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Colton Underwood, Gigi Gorgeous, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Mae Martin,Dustin Lance Black, Harper Steele, Miss Benny, and many more.
