Lagoona Bloo, the self proclaimed Mermaid Pop Star, released her latest album titled ‘Underwater Bubble Pop’. GLAAD’s Yolanda Lenge sat down for an exclusive interview with Lagoona Bloo and discusses her new music, inspirations and her journey of self-discovery.
Lagoona Bloo unveiled her latest project, Underwater Bubble Pop, on April 26th. Lagoona Bloo has become a prominent figure in the pop music scene of New York City in recent years—with captivating melodies and an impressive vocal range spanning three octaves, her synth-driven anthems are revolutionizing the fusion of pop and drag. Her music has garnered over 2 million streams on Spotify and has been featured numerous times on the platform’s esteemed editorial playlists, namely OBSESSED and Fresh Finds Pop.
She expresses her deep admiration for mermaids and pop stars, which served as a major influence on her drag persona. By combining her love for mermaids with her music, Lagoona was able to create a unique mermaid fantasy that perfectly complemented the album. She explains, “I said to myself, if I am going to proclaim the title of Mermaid Pop Star, I have to create the music behind it, and thus Underwater Bubble Pop was born! I wanted to write an album that was an exclamatory statement of the many facets of who I am as a queer, Latin artist and truly defined my introduction into the independent music industry.”
Lagoona shares the impact drag has made in her life, “Drag was a key that unlocked so many doors for me and sparked a journey of self-discovery and healing that I am so grateful for. I have gotten through some of the hardest moments of my life with my art to carry the tears. I have experienced some of my greatest achievements and have found so much love in this artform.”
Currently, LGBTQ youth are facing unjust limitations on their freedom to exhibit creativity. Drag and artistry are essential components in empowering individuals and fostering a climate of acceptance within the community. Lagoona expresses her encouragement for those striving to nurture their creativity, “I think the reason this artistry is so vital is because we as queer people need to see ourselves thrive in a world that is not made for us. Our community is constantly under attack, and it is so essential to be powerfully represented to inspire LGBTQ youth and give hope. If you are trying to embrace your creativity, I want to congratulate you!! I want to remind you that your queerness is your superpower! I’m here to remind you of how incredible you are and encourage you to always remember how worthy you are of expressing yourself!”
When listeners tune into Underwater Bubble Pop, Lagoona wants you to prepare to “smile, chuckle, yell “yasss,” dance, and sing along.” She shares, “I love that it almost sounds like it’s its own genre, so listeners can expect to hear the many sides of bubblegum, Latin, and dance-pop with shimmery melodies and catchy hooks and oozing in sexy confidence and self-love!”
