Residents of New Jersey’s Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties who are in need of assistance legally changing their name and/or gender marker, are in luck! In honor of Pride Month, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) and its Pro Bono Partnership Project are hosting a Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals.
In partnership with Hudson Pride Center, the first Name and Gender Marker Change Clinic will take place Tuesday, June 25, 2024 via Zoom. Qualifying individuals will be assisted by a volunteer attorney in filling out the paper work and will be given detailed information on how to file the paperwork and what follow-up is required.
GLAAD reports over 500 anti-LGBTQ bills being introduced across the country this past legislative session. In a time where states across America are actively working to strip rights and freedoms away from trans and gender nonconforming individuals, it’s especially meaningful to see non-profit organizations like this doing what they can to make life easier and validate the identities of members of this community.
To participate, clients have to qualify for NNJLS services, which is based on income/asset assessment. As a non-profit law firm, NNJLS provides free legal services to low-income individuals in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties, in many legal areas, including housing, immigration, family, consumer, public benefits, and so much more.
NNJLS plans to offer this clinic on an on-going basis going forward and urges interested individuals to register and find out if they are eligible.
If you reside in Bergen, Hudson, or Passaic Counties and are interested in attending this clinic, you can contact NNJLS at ProBonoNNJLS@lsnj.org or visit here to register! Learn more about Hudson Pride Center here.
