The GLAAD Wrap: First clips for ‘Pier Kids,’ ‘Uncle Frank,’ ‘No Ordinary Man’; ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ return date; new music from Troye Sivan, Kehlani, Victoria Monet, and more!

The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Last Friday, the film Summerland was released on digital platforms. The British period drama follows Alice, a writer who lives by herself in a remote village, until she is tasked with taking care of a young boy during WWII. As the two become closer, she tells him of her past including her love story with another woman, Vera, when she was younger. Summerland is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and more.

2) A clip has been released for documentary Pier Kids from director Elegance Bratton, which follows homeless LGBTQ youth at Christopher Street pier. The film focuses on three Black queer youth, Casper, Desean, and Kyrstal over the course of five hears. Watch the clip here and catch Pier Kids at the virtual Bentonville film festival. The first clip has been released for upcoming film Uncle Frank, which will be released on Amazon Prime on Thanksgiving. The film, set in 1973, follows teenager Beth, who goes to NYU where her Uncle Frank teaches and lives with his parters Walid Nadeem. When Frank’s father, who never accepted his sexuality, dies suddenly, Frank and Beth return to the South for the funeral and Frank faces his long-buried trauma. Watch the clip below. 

3) The first clip has been released for documentary No Ordinary Man, from trans writer Amos Can. The film explores the life and legacy of Billy Tipton, a musician and trans icon. The film features clips from trans voices including. Marquise Vilsón, Scott Turner Schofield, Susan Stryker, C. Riley Snorton, and Thomas Page McBee. It will premiere at TIFF; watch the clip here. In more film news, Searchlight Pictures will be adapting documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood into a feature film, with out filmmaker Luca Guadagnino set to direct, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg writing. The film will follow Scotty Bowers, who became the go-to person to arrange relations for gay Hollywood players in Post-WWII Hollywood.

4) Lifetime has announced their slate for their upcoming holiday movies, one of which features a gay romance at the center, a first for the network. The movie is The Christmas Set Up, which follows Hugo, a corporate lawyer who returns home for the holidays, where his mother tries to set him up with childhood crush Paul. Out actress Ali Stroker will also star in a Lifetime Christmas move, Christmas Ever After.

5) Upcoming HBO Drama We Are Who We Are has set a premiere date for September 14. The show, from out creator Luca Guadagnino, follows two American teenagers on a military base in Italy, one of whom has two moms. Watch the trailer below. HBO has also set a premiere date for Coastal Elites, a show shot from five different perspectives when the coronavirus pandemic hit. The cast includes out actors Sarah Paulson and Dan Levy.

6) Trace Lysette has joined the trans-led team behind docuseries Trans in Trumpland as an executive producer. The project follows four transgender Americans in their fight against the Trump Administration, as it continues to attack the trans community. Out writer and actor Lena Waithe is developing a new series for Amazon centering around open marriages. This is her second series in development at Amazon; the first being horror anthology show Them: Covenant.

7) A date has been announced for the season three premiere of Star Trek: Discovery. The show, which features out actors Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp as gay couple Hugh Culber and Paul Stamets, will return to CBS All Access on October 15. Amazon’s Hunters has been renewed for a second season. The Nazi-hunting show features lesbian character Millie Morris, who will return for the second season. Out actor Andrew Scott has been cast in upcoming BBC and Amazon series The Pursuit of Love, as an eccentric neighbor of protagonist Linda Radlett in post WWI England.

8) The debut album of bi singer/songwriter Victoria Monét, Jaguar, was released today. Download and stream the album here and watch the music video for the single “Jaguar” below. Tegan and Sara have released a new music video for their song “I Know I’m Not the Only One,” off of their latest album Hey I’m Just Like You. 9) Troye Sivan has released a new single “Rager Teenager” with an accompanying music video. His upcoming EP In A Dream will be released on August 21. 10) Queer singer Kehlani released a new song and video last week, “Can I,” an homage to sex workers and how sex work needs to be decriminalized. Watch the video below and stream the song here. 11) The nominations were announced for the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards last week. Out bi singer Lady Gaga was nominated for nine VMAs including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. Halsey was also nominated twice in Best Pop and Best Editing, as was Demi Lovato in Video for Good and Best Visual Effects. Miley Cyrus also received two nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Editing. The VMAs will air on August 30; see the full list of nominees here.
