Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Amazon Studios will be producing Ex-Husbands, a film from out writers Billy Eichner and Paul Rudnick. Eichner will star as one half of the first gay couple to get married in New York, who are now going through a messy divorce. The film will be produced by out producer Greg Berlanti and producing partner Sarah Shechter. In more Amazon news, the official trailer has been released for Amazon’s Cinderella, which stars Camila Cabello as the title role and out actor Billy Porter as the fairy godmother character. The film will be released on Amazon Prime on September 3; watch the trailer below.
2) Filmmaker Sydney Freeland, who is trans, is directing a new film, Rez Ball, for Netflix. The film, inspired by the book Canyon Dreams, will follow a Native American high school basketball team who have to band together after losing their star player. Out actor Justice Smith has been cast in upcoming film Sharper from A24. The film stars Julianne Moore and Sebastian Stan as con artists, and Smith will play Tom, a bookshop owner in New York.

3) A trailer has been released for the second season of GLAAD Media Award winning series Diary of a Future President. The trailer shows main character Elena’s brother Bobby dealing with his crush on another boy and the return of Elena’s mom’s queer friend Camila. The season will release all ten episodes on Disney+ on August 18. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, recently cancelled by NBC, will be returning for a holiday movie for Roku. The main cast, which includes out actor Alex Newell as gay character Mo, are set to return for the special.
4) Out actor Aubrey Plaza will produce and star in the upcoming Hulu drama pilot Olga Dies Dreaming. The show tells the story of a Nuyorican brother and sister who live in gentrifying Brooklyn. Plaza will play the sister, the titular Olga, who pursues perfection to escape away from her past. A trailer has been released for season six of OWN’s Queen Sugar. The show will take a look at the Bordelon family and how the pandemic has affected their lives, including bisexual character Nova. Watch the trailer below and catch the season six premiere on September 7.
5) Out actor Rosie O’Donnell has joined Amazon’s reboot of A League of Their Own. The star of the original film will be playing a bartender at a local gay bar in the updated series. Out actor Matt Bomer has set to play one of the leads in Echoes, a new limited series from Netflix. Bomer will play the husband of Leni, one of two identical twins who have swapped lives.

6) Out actor Clea DuVall has been cast in The First Lady, a Showtime anthology which follows Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis). DuVall will plays Malvina “Tommy” Thompson, Eleanor Roosevelt’s trusted friend and adviser who was rumored to be her lover. Showtime has renewed Lena Waithe’s The Chi for a fifth season to air in 2022. The show includes queer characters in the ensemble set in the South Side of Chicago.

7) Lady Gaga has announced that she and Tony Bennett will be releasing a Cole Porter tribute album on October 5. Pre-order the album, Love For Sale, here. Out artist Brandon Markell Holmes release a new single “Garden” with Rogue Vogue. It’s the first track of their upcoming EP Garden, which will be released on August 27. Stream the single here!
8) Out singer Jessy Jones released her new EP on Thursday, Sad Girl Disco Party, which the singer describes as a “celebration of being yourself.” Stream the EP here! 9) Out musician Frank Ocean is set to headline Coachella 2023. He was originally going to perform at the 2020 festival, which was pushed to 2022, but, due to scheduling, will be taking the 2023 slot instead.
