The GLAAD Wrap: New shows announced from Nyle DiMarco and Steven Canals; new music from Troye Sivan, Neon Trees; and more!

The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Universal has picked up Talent, a new musical drama from out writer Lena Waithe. The film follows a failed songwriter, played by Cynthia Erivo, who returns to her home in Chicago and begins teaching young people to prepare for their annual talent show. In more film news, out actor Billy Eichner is developing and plans to star in Man In the Box, a biopic of comedian and actor Paul Lynde, who was also gay. The film will explore Lynde’s comedic work, his life, and his experience with being out among his family, friends, and co-workers but never to the wider public.

2) Rub & Tug, a project following Pittsburgh massage parlor owner and trans man Dante “Tex” Gill, will be moving forward as a television series. The pilot will be written by trans writer and GLAAD Board Member Our Lady J (Pose, Transparent), and the project has confirmed that a trans man will play the lead. The show will follow Gill’s rise in the Pittsburgh ‘70s crime scene, as well has his romance with his girlfriend, Cynthia. 

3) Out Pose creator Steven Canals has created a new limited series for FX, 81 Words. It tells the true story of gay activists Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings, who risked everything to work with GAYPA — a group of closeted psychiatrists — and challenge the American Psychiatric Association’s definition of homosexuality to end the practice of gay people being classified as mentally ill. The show will be based off the This American Life episode of the same name, which is also the inspiration for the upcoming PBS documentary, Cured.

4) Out actor, activist and model Nyle DiMarco will be developing a new scripted comedy series for Spectrum. The show will focus on his experiences as a “charismatic, street-smart deaf man in modern times.” DiMarco will be an executive producer alongside Daniel Dae Kim. 

5) Drag Race has announced a new docuseries, RuPaul’s Drag Race: Vegas Revue, which will follow six drag queens as they prepare to launch a live Vegas show. The queens the show will follow include Yvie Oddly, Asia O’Hara, Derrick Barry, Kameron Michaels, Naomi Smalls, and Vanessa “Vanjie” Mateo. The docuseries will premiere on VH1 on August 21. 

6) Out actors Zachary Quinto and Andrew Rannells have joined the cast of Invincible, an upcoming superhero animated series from Amazon. Quinto will portray Robot, an ally of the superhero Invincible, and Rannells will voice William Clockwell, Invincible’s best friend. ABC has started developing a new medical drama from David Renaud, Seth Gordon, and out producer Josh Berman. The series will be inspired by Renaud’s life, following a woman who loses the ability to walk after a tragic accident. 

7) Out singer Troye Sivan released a new song and video for his single “Easy.” The song will be featured on Sivan’s upcoming EP In a Dream, which will be released on August 21. 8) Neon Trees, the alt-rock band lead by out singer Tyler Glenn, released their fourth album today, I Can Feel You Forgetting Me. This is the band’s first full length studio album in six years, Glenn released a solo album in 2016. Listen to the album here and watch the video for their single, “Mess Me Up” below. 

9) Out actor Andrew Scott has been cast in Three Kings, a new play set to stream from London’s Old Vic theater. The play was written for Scott by Pride screenwriter Stephen Beresford. The show will broadcast from July 29 – August 1.
