The GLAAD Wrap: ‘The New Mutants’ on VOD; ‘The Last of Us’ picked up by HBO; new music from Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, King Princess; and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The New Mutants is now available to rent or own on digital and Blu-ray. The X-Men offshoot features an interracial queer romance between two main characters, both teenage girls. Check out the latest trailer below and get your copy of the film today! In other film release news, out actress Sarah Paulson’s new film Run was also released today on Hulu. Paulson plays an overprotective mother who may be keeping secrets from her disabled daughter. Watch the trailer here and catch the horror-thriller on the streamer today! In more film release news, filmmaker Matthew Rankin’s queer fever-dream The Twentieth Century is out in theaters and virtual cinemas today. Playing at film festivals like Outfest Los Angeles and Berlin, the film is a heavily-stylized, fictionalized account of Canadian politician Mackenzie King’s ambitions to become prime minister and romances with both men and women. 2) In other film news, the trailer for Paramount Network’s gay cowboy holiday film Dashing in December has been released. The movie follows a gay man who returns to his home to his mother’s ranch from New York City for the holidays, where he finds himself falling for one the male ranch workers. Watch the trailer below, and tune into the film premiere on Dec. 13, 7pm ET, on Paramount Network. In more film news, action-drama Haymaker now has a North American release date of January 29, 2021 after being acquired by Kamikaze Dogfight and Gravitas Ventures. The film follows a retired Muay Thai fighter (Nick Sasso, also the director) working as a bouncer, who rescues an alluring transgender performer (played by out trans actress Nomi Ruiz) from a nefarious thug, eventually becoming her bodyguard, protector, and confidant. 

3) In film development news, out actor Billy Porter is set to make his feature film directorial debut with coming-of-age story What If? from a screenplay by Alvaro García Lecuona. The story centers on a high school senior posting on social media about his crush on Kelsa, a trans girl at his school, resulting in the internet encouraging him to pursue the relationship. What If? was also featured on the 2019 GLAAD List in partnership with The Black List. In more film dev news, Marvel Studio’s Deadpool 3 now has writers: Wendy Molyneaux and Lizzie Molyneux. The canonically queer titular character will once again by played by Ryan Reynolds; no production date has been set yet. 

4) The trailer for High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special was released this week. The special will feature the cast of the Disney+ show as they discuss the importance of the holidays and perform classic songs from the season. Watch the trailer below and be sure to tune in to Disney+ for the premiere of the special on Dec. 11. In more holiday special news, a new trailer for out drag queens Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme’s The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special has been released. The special will be available to stream for purchase on their website on December 1; watch the new trailer here!

5) In TV casting news, out actress Alexandra Billings has joined ABC’s The Conners for a multi-episode arc in the current third season. Billings plays Robin, a no-nonsense, but fair transgender woman who becomes a friend and mentor to Darlene. Catch the new episode of The Conners with Billings on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 9pm ET on ABC. In more ABC casting news, out actress Niecy Nash is set to join the cast of ABC’s Women of the Movement. Nash will play Alma, Emmett Till’s grandmother, in the six-episode limited series set to premiere in 2021. After Emmett’s horrific murder in 1955 Mississippi, Alma, who had been like a second mother to Emmett, fought to protect her family in Chicago while her daughter Mamie traveled the country seeking justice in Emmett’s name.

6) In more casting news, out non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park has been cast in the new Netflix live-action adaptation of Japanese anime Cowboy Bebop. Park will play nonbinary character Gren, who is described as “a Bowie-esque embodiment of 22nd century handsome and seductive beauty.” Watch Park discuss the exciting news below. In other casting news, out trans actor JJ Hawkins has been cast in a recurring role in The CW’s Charmed reboot. Hawkins will play a transgender male college student named Kevin, making him the first trans actor to appear in the series.

7) In more TV news, Drag Race is coming to Spain! It was announced this week that a new edition of reality drag queen competition called Drag Race Spain will stream exclusively on WOW Presents Plus, production company World of Wonder’s streaming service. Check out the announcement below. In other TV development news, out host and producer Andy Cohen has a new docu-series in the works called For Real: The Story of Reality TV. The seven-part series will take a look at some of the most iconic reality television moments from some of the most famous unscripted shows like Keeping Up with the Kardashians, The Bachelor, Real Housewives, and Survivor. Cohen will host and executive produce for cable network E!.

8) In other TV development news, out producer Greg Berlanti is developing a new superhero series called Wonder Girl for the CW. The new series, written by Dailyn Rodriguez, is set to feature the first Latina superhero title character of a DC TV series. It will follow the backstory/origin story of the DC Comics character Yara Flor, who was recently revealed as a new Wonder Woman. In more TV dev news, out filmmaker Lee Daniels currently has a television series reboot of the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale in progress at ABC. Infused with the humor, sensuousness, and sincerity of the groundbreaking and beloved original film, the TV reimagining looks at the next generation of our women through the lens of the tangled friendships and complicated lives of their daughters. Additionally, a television series adaption of the popular video game The Last of Us is in the works at HBO. The game features queer lead character Ellie, as well as trans character Lev in the sequel, who will hopefully be included in the new series.

9) In more TV news, out actress Sarah Paulson has shared a first look at her new role in out producer Ryan Murphy’s series American Crime Story: Impeachment. Paulson has transformed into White House whistleblower Linda Tripp for the depiction of the infamous Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal of 1998. Check out the new photo of the star below. In more TV first looks, the CW has released a teaser for the newest season of Batwoman, starring out bisexual and Black actress Javicia Leslie. The short clip shows Leslie donning the redesigned bat suit and saying, “Time to be powerful.” Watch the clip here and catch the Season 2 premiere of Batwoman on Jan. 17 on the CW.

10) Out musician Tayla Parx’ new album Coping Mechanisms is out now. In more single news, out musician King Princess has released a new song “Monster” for the HBO MAX special Adventure Time: Distant Lands – Obsidian, which is streaming now. In other single release news, out New Zealand musician Emily Edrosa has released the final single and video “She Agreed” from her new album Another Wave is Coming, which is out today, Nov. 20. 12) In more music video news, out drag queen Katya has relased a new video for song “Ding Dong!” featuring out drag queen Trixie Mattel in a cameo. Watch the psychedelic video below. 14) In comic book news, BOOM! Studios has announced a new original series called Specter Inspectors from out comics creator Bowen McCurdy (The Long Way Home) and out artist and rising star Kaitlyn Musto. The five-issue series follows a group of social media savvy ghost hunters, including plenty of queer characters, who seek out supernatural hot spots in order to answer the ultimate question. . . are ghosts even real?! The new comics are due in February 2021; physical copies can be found in local comic book shops, while digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

15) In gaming award news, the nominees for the seventh annual Game Awards were revealed this past Wednesday, Nov. 18. Queer-inclusive game The Last of Us Part II leads with 10 noms, while another queer-inclusive game, Tell Me Why, was nominated for the “Games for Impact” award. You can vote for your favorite games here; fan voting closes on Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 9pm ET.
