The GLAAD Wrap: ‘Moving On’ and ‘Monica’ acquired for release, Streamys winners and Critic’s Choice nominees announced, new music from Maria Becerra and Mothé, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1.) Moving On, a revenge comedy starring queer Hollywood legend Lily Tomlin, was acquired by Roadside Attractions this week. The film follows two estranged friends (Tomlin and Jane Fonda) as they come back together to get revenge on the widower of their recently deceased best friend. Roadside set a March 17 release date, so stay tuned for updates!

2.) IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to Monica, a family drama from Andrea Pallaoro. The film stars transgender actress Trace Lysette as the titular Monica, who returns home for the first time since her youth to take care of her dying mother (Patricia Clarkson). 3.) Lesbian actress Ruby Rose was cast in The Collective, an upcoming action-thriller following a group of assassains. In other film news, I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY: The Whitney Houston Movie Experience will come to NYC this Sunday! You can register here for tickets.

4.) Gen V, the upcoming spinoff of popular Amazon Prime series The Boys, released a first look at its premiere season this week. The show takes place at the only U.S. college for young superheroes as they compete for the schools top ranking. The show features out actor Marco Pigossi as Doctor Edison Cardosa, and hopefully we’ll see some queer storylines as well. Stay tuned for Gen V in 2023! In other streaming news, Showtime’s award-winning drama Yellowjackets will return for its second season on Sunday, March 26, 2023. The extremely queer show is half horror, half teen drama, and wholly beloved, with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Don’t miss Yellowjackets this March!

5.) Hulu has acquired the U.S. streaming rights to the second season of Rūrangi, an International Emmy-winning show out of New Zealand. The show follows transgender activist Caz Davis who returns home to Rūrangi, a small dairy-farming community, for the first time since transitioning. Season two will intensify the battle between trans activists, local Maori, and farmers, while ancestors reach out to the living with messages from the past. Check out Rūrangi on Hulu in the first quarter of 2023! In other Hulu news, gay actor Amit Rahav has been cast in We Were the Lucky Ones, which follows a Jewish family separated during World War II determined to reunite. 

6.) Two-time Latin Grammy-nominated bisexual singer-songwriter Maria Becerra released her new album La Nena De Argentina on Thursday. Non-binary artist Mothé recently released their new single “Happy” and an accompanying video. Queer pop-rock band Hyphen Hyphen also released a new song titled “Call My Name” in advance of their upcoming album C’est La Vie. Queer artist Stefano May released an acoustic holiday cover of “We Are the Power” on Thursday. Queer singer-songwriter and Twitch streamer Emily Henry released the video for her song “How it Feels” this week. Domincan-Cambodian singer-songwriter Tai’Aysha released a remix of her single “Sorry.” 

7.) Gay comedian Jerrod Carmichael has been tapped to host the 80th Golden Globes ceremony. Carmichael won an Emmy earlier this year for his special Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, which was also just this week nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, January 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, and will last three hours. Stay tuned for the nomination announcements on Monday’s Today show. 

8.) The 2022 Streamys held its ceremony this week, giving out awards to the biggest internet creators and brands. Former RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen served as live announcer for the awards program. Gay YouTuber and comedian Brandon Rogers took home the award for “Writing,” and Tinder’s LGBTQ-inclusive Once Upon a Bi campaign took home the award for “Social Impact Campaign.” Be sure to engage with queer creators online so we can see this list continue to grow! 

9.) The Critic’s Choice Awards nomination list was released this week, wit queer-inclusive shows and out performers receiving a ton of looks. Andor, Bad Sisters, Better Call Saul, Euphoria, and The Good Fight are all queer-inclusive and up for “Best Drama Series.” “Best Comedy Series” queer-inclusive nominees include Abbott Elementary, Barry, Better Things, Ghosts, Reboot, and Reservation Dogs. This is Going to Hurt, all received a nomination for “Best Limited Series,” and Fresh, and Three Months got nods for “Best Movie made for Television.” Harley Quinn, and Star Trek: Lower Decks all got nominations for “Best Animated Series,” and gay TV personality Andy Cohen’s show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen was nominated for “Best Talk Show.” Queer actress Devery Jacobs got a nomination for “Best Actress in a Comedy” for her role in Reservation Dogs, while gay actors the late Leslie Jordan and Brandon Scott Jones took home nominations for “Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” for Call Me Kat and Ghosts respectively. Out actor Murray Bartlett received a nomination for “Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television” for his role in Welcome to Chippendales, and Niecy Nash got a look for “Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television” for her role in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Finally, queer comedians did well this year, with nominations for Fortune Feimster: Good Fortune, Joel Kim Booster: Psychosexual, Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, and Would it Kill You to Laugh? Starring Kate Berlant & John Early in the “Best Comedy Special” category. Don’t miss the Critic’s Choice Awards ceremony on January 15, 2023.
