Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) Fire Island is out on Hulu today! The unapologetic, modern day queer rom-com is inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and stars out actors Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, Matt Rogers, Margaret Cho, and more. The story centers around a group of queer best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long annual vacation in the Fire Island Pines, but unexpected circumstances threaten their summer in gay paradise and their bonds as a chosen family.
2) The Amazon Prime official trailer has dropped for Billy Porter’s upcoming directorial debut Anything’s Possible. Based on a selection on The GLAAD list, the coming-of-age film follows confident trans high school girl Kelsa (out trans actress Eva Reign) as she navigates the excitement, affection, and aches of a budding romance with classmate Khal during her senior year. 3) Cold War romantic drama Firebird is available now on digital and VOD. Based on a true story that unfolded during the Cold War, Firebird is a love story set against the backdrop of a Soviet Air Force base in Estonia during late 1970s Communist rule. Sergey (Tom Prior), a young soldier who dreams of becoming an actor in Moscow, is counting the days until his military service ends. His life turns upside down when he locks eyes with Roman (Oleg Zagorodnii), an enigmatic ace fighter pilot newly assigned to his base. Sergey and Roman risk their lives to be together at a time when Soviet men in uniform caught having a sexual affair were met with the severest punishment.
4) Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will star in the upcoming Amazon Prime romantic comedy Red, White, & Royal Blue. Based on the New York Times best-selling novel, the film follows Mexican-American character Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez) whose mother’s recent election as President places him among the American aristocracy. However, his extended dispute with British royal Prince Henry (Galitzine) threatens U.S./U.K. relations after the two are photographed during a quarrel. Both nations’ heads of state stage a truce between the young rivals, and an initially spurious, public friendship blossoms into a secret romance that could complicate Alex’s mother’s re-election campaign and the stability of two countries.

5) HBO Max queer pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death has been renewed for a second season. Former gentleman Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) starts a new life as captain of the pirate ship Revenge, yet fails to gain the respect of his crew, who are on the verge of mutiny. After his ship is usurped by the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), the two surprisingly nurture not only a close friendship, but love for one another. Other LGBTQ characters include crew members Lucius (out actor Nathan Foad), Jim Jimenez (out non-binary actor Vico Ortiz), Black Pete (Matthew Maher), and Fang (out actor David Fane).
6) Out actor, chef, and TV personality Antoni Porowski has been cast in upcoming Polish Netflix limited series Queen. Decades after leaving, an acclaimed tailor and drag queen returns from Paris to his Polish hometown to repair his relationship with his daughter. Porowski will play a tailor assistant named Antoś. Additionally, out actor, comedian and filmmaker Brian Jordan Alvarez will executive produce and star in upcoming FX comedy pilot English Teacher. Alvarez plays gay high school English teacher Evan who, along with his fellow teachers in Austin, endeavors to balance the conflicting demands of the students and their parents in a system where the rules seem to change daily.
7) Out playwright and screenwriter Matthew López will develop New York Times bestseller The Deviant’s War: The Homosexual vs. The United States of America into an Amazon limited series. The book details how 1950s Department of Defense astronomer Frank Kameny helped lead the fight for LGBTQ civil rights when he sued the federal government for firing him because he was gay and co-founded the Mattachine Society in Washington, D.C. to protest the persecution of gay federal employees.

10) The Marvel’s Voices anthology series has kicked off Pride month with Marvel’s Voices: Iceman #1, the first issue of a four-part Infinity Comic. After helping terraform the entire planet of Mars, Bobby Drake sets out to explore what his Omega potential truly means through his powers, his community, and his love life.

11) The 2022 Queer|Art|Pride Digital Book & Print Fair will celebrate work by NYC organization Queer|Art’s community of over 50 LGBTQ+ artists June 1 through July 31. In the online marketplace, you can peruse and purchase artist books, novels, zines, poetry chapbooks, drawings, photographs, watercolors, garments, collages, prints, and more. 100% of the Fair’s process will directly benefit the participating artists.
