The GLAAD Wrap: Trailers for ‘Dead to Me’ and ‘We’re Here’, first-look images of ‘The L Word: Generation Q’, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1.) Vertical Entertainment has acquired the rights to Pretty Boy Floyd biopic Good Side of A Bad Man, featuring out actress Ashley Benson. The film details the incredible true story of Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd, one of the most notorious bank robbers of the Depression era, alongside his wife Ruby (Benson). In more Vertical Entertainment acquisition news, the company has picked up the psychological thriller Misanthrope, starring out Emmy-nominee Shailene Woodley. In the film, Woodley portrays a talented and troubled police officer who is recruited by the FBI to track down a mass murderer. 

2.) Bisexual Moana actress Auli’i Cravalho has been set to star in the forthcoming supernatural teen comedy Darby and the Dead. Cravalho plays the school’s Queen Bee Capri, who unexpectedly dies in a hair straightening accident, forcing her to befriend spiritual messanger Darby in hopes of saving her ‘Sweet 17’ party; check out Hulu’s first-look image below! In more casting news, queer Do Revenge star Talia Ryder has been cast in Dumb Money, joining previously announced out actresses Myha’la Herrold and Shailene Woodley! Based on Ben Mezrich’s novel The Antisocial Network, the pic spotlights the January 2021 “short squeeze” movement surrounding GameStop, where amateur investors increased the stock values of the retail chain, potentially changing Wall Street forever. In other film casting news, bisexual Encanto actress Stephanie Beatriz has been tapped to star in the romantic dramedy Bucky F*ing Dent. Derived from David Duchovny’s novel of the same name, the film is set in 1978 and follows Marty, a fatally ill Boston Red Sox fan. To keep him alive and happy, Marty’s son Ted enlists his grief counselor Mariana (Beatriz) and their friends to fake a Red Sox winning streak! 

3.) Netflix has released the official trailer for the third and final season of Dead to Me, created by out comedian Liz Feldman. The GLAAD Media Award-nominated dark comedy follows two women— including bisexual character Judy (Linda Cardellini)— as they grapple with grief, loss, and forgiveness. Dead to Me also features recurring lesbian character Michelle Gutierrez played by queer actress Natalie Morales; watch the new season November 17 and check out the trailer below! In other Netflix news, the streamer has renewed the DC Comics fantasy drama series The Sandman, which includes non-binary character Desire played by non-binary actor Mason Alexander Park. 

4.) Drag superstars Shangela, Bob The Drag Queen, and Eureka are back and better than ever in HBO’s Emmy and GLAAD Media Award-winning We’re Here season three trailer! The sneak-peak picks up as the trio continues to recruite diverse groups of local residents across America to share their stories, increase awareness, and promote acceptance through one-night-only drag shows, while facing increased backlash and anti-LGBTQ legislation. In the words of Eueka “We’re Here and we’re not going anywhere”; watch the new season November 25 on HBO and check out the trailer below! In more HBO news, HBO Max has set the official release date for The Last of Us television live-action adaptation. The series includes queer characters from the beloved video game franchise, including lead Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and couple Frank (Emmy Award-winning actor Murray Bartlett) and Bill (Nick Offerman). Watch The Last of Us on the streamer January 15, 2023!

5.) Showtime has unveiled first-look images for the third season of The L Word: Generation Q— check them out here! The the highly anticipated season, which features out guest stars Margaret Cho, FLETCHER, and Kehlani, continues to follow the intermingled lives of your favorite group of queer friends as they experience love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in Los Angeles. 6.) Fox has released the first promo for its upcoming anthology series Accused. Following the same format as the BBC series of the same name, Accused centers the defendant’s point of view to explore how an ordinary person can get caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Out Kinky Boots actor J. Harrison Ghee stars in an episode directed by gay icon Billy Porter, which tells the story of a drag queen’s whilwind affair and its devastating consequences. 7.) Out actors Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza have joined the MCU in Disney+ and Marvel’s Agatha: Coven of Chaos! Though plot details of the WandaVision spinoff are being kept under wraps, Locke reportedly plays a gay teen with a dark sense of humor. In other casting news, Apple TV+ has added bisexual actress Alia Shawkat to the sophmore season of its workplace thriller Severance. The multi-Emmy Award-winning series follows a team of employees at Lumon Industries, who have undergone a procedure that surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives, forcing them to confront the truth about who they really are. Additionally, you can expect to see a lot more of Bernard Upshaw Jr., as Jermelle Simon has been upped to series regular for the recently announced third season of The Upshaws. Co-created by out comedian Wanda Sykes, the sitcom follows a working-class Black family in Indiana who strive for a better life and a happy home. 

8.) After a 13 year hiatus, Friday the 13th is making a comeback! Peacock has announced their forthcoming expanded prequel series Crystal Lake from A24 and out writer, showrunner and executive producer Bryan Fuller. Additionally, queer head writer of HBO’s A Black Sketch Show Lauren Ashley Smith has announced the development of her family comedy Moore & Moore for ABC! The single-camera series centers on a close-knot group of queer sisters who struggle with a familial identity crisis when a male fiancé is introduced into the clan.  

9.) Following the long-awaited release of the Midnights album, Taylor Swift has announced her queer-stacked opening acts for The Eras Tour, including out stars Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, and beabadoobee! The tour spans across U.S. stadiums from March to August 2023, with international dates yet to be revealed. In more music news, queer dream pop artist POLARTROPICA has released a new song WHAT’S YOUR FANTASY in tribute to the legacy of the queer, trans, femme community in LA; check out the teaser of the upcoming music video here! Out actor, singer and icon Billy Porter has released a new song called “Stranger Things.” Listen here!

10.) Out screen and stage actor Anthony Rapp is taking his one-man show Without You off-broadway! The production, based on Rapp’s best-selling memoir, chronicles his early years on the original Broadway hit Rent and beyond– sign up for presale tickets here and catch Without You at New World Stages from January 25 to April 30, 2023. In more Broadway news, Lincoln Center Theater has set out Tony Award-winning actor Andrew Burnap to star in their revival of Lerner & Loewe’s Camelot. Watch Burnap as the leading Arthur on March 9 at LCT’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, with an official opening on April 13, 2023!

11.) The nominations for the first ever Children’s and Family Emmy Awards have been announced, with Netflix’s queer coming-of-age drama Heartstopper scoring nine nominations! The innagural year’s nominees include a plethora of inclusive programming, such as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Amphibia, The Baby-Sitters Club, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., Better Nate Than Ever, Ada Twist Scientist, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Diary of a Future President, and more!
