Today GLAAD announced a new series of digital ads airing in Texas, Tennessee, Florida, and other key states in the ongoing effort to fight proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation and grow support for LGBTQ people and families.
The ads direct to GLAAD’s new action page, www.glaad.org/ACTNOW, where constituents can immediately contact their lawmakers and send a message opposing the bills.
Right now, there are more than 450 anti-LGBTQ bills pending across the country with more than 340 bills specifically targeting transgender people. Lawmakers and governors in Utah, South Dakota, Mississippi, and Tennessee have all passed and signed anti-transgender health care bans this session. Tennessee governor Bill Lee has not only signed an anti-transgender health care ban, but also a bill imposing heavy restrictions on drag performances – the first bill of its kind in the nation.
Other proposed bills include bans on education curricula that include LGBTQ issues and history, bans on transgender student participation in school sports, and more. For a comprehensive description of all LGBTQ-related bills pending in various states, visit https://www.equalityfederation.org/state-legislation. Research from The Trevor Project found that 86% of LGBTQ youth say the bills that were proposed in 2022 have had a negative impact on their mental health.
