Model, author, transgender rights activist, and film producer Geena Rocero can now add being named one of Glamour’s 2023 Women of the Year to her already outstanding resume.
Every year, Glamour Magazine honors women creating bold change in their field of work and shines a spotlight on them in this annual publication and red carpet event. Some of the amazing women being honored at this year’s ceremony include actress and activist America Ferrera, actress Millie Bobby Brown, hip-hop artist Mary J. Rocero’s Glamour article was written by fellow trans writer and advocate Raquel Willis. She recounts Rocero’s humble beginnings as a pageant queen in the Philippines. From there, Rocero has gone on to have a wildly successful modeling career of nearly 2 decades, is the author of a critically acclaimed memoir titled Horse Barbie, and continues to be among the leading voices advocating for transgender rights.
“I feel like I’ve sprinkled the world with my world, with my way of thinking, with my magical sense of things,” Rocero told Willis about her memoir. Horse Barbie offers readers an intimate look at Rocero’s life story, including her courageous decision to come out publicly as trans in 2014.
Willis describes the book as “an exploration of some of the most universal themes of womanhood: belonging, confidence, and love.”
Rocero has paved the way for so many to follow in her footsteps, including trans model Zaya Wade. Wade’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union-Wade shared that, “When I first met Geena, I was blown away by her beauty, her intelligence, and her graceful presence. Her fierce and unrelenting activism in the face of mounting adversity is incredibly inspiring to me and my entire family. Knowing that there are angels on earth like Geena, fighting for real equality and change, is so necessary. She provides a voice for the voiceless and the road map for others to follow her lead.”
