Richard Land
President, Southern Evangelical Seminary
Former President, Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission
—Lost his job with the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission after an ethics investigation.
—Said of transgender children: “Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and helpful is child abuse…. These people are practicing psychological and physiological child abuse on a whole generation of our nation’s children, and it’s up to us as responsible and clear-thinking adults to stop them.”
—LGBTQ people are supposedly stealing cultural icons: “These people have gone after the icons in our culture…. They’ve gone after the military, they’ve gone after the Boy Scouts, they’ve gone after Disney, and you’re seeing a gradual waning of the influence of the worldview that made America what it is, the Judeo-Christian worldview.”
—On gay people: “We do need to pray for our enemies, those that oppose us, because they’re victims. Our enemy is the Devil, our enemy is that old lion that walks about seeking whom he may devour and who is the god of this age and the prince of the power of the air and he has these people in their thrall. It’s not that we hate gays, it’s that we love scripture and love gays enough to tell them what the truth is. And the truth is that God does not condone same-sex sexual relations, period. They are an abomination to him and if we really love these people we are going to tell them the truth.”
—Equated a wedding cake baker who must serve a same-sex couple with an African-American baker who must serve the KKK.
—Said God is judging America because of same-sex marriage (beginning at 2:04): “Whenever you go against God’s law and you challenge God’s law and you have the affrontery and hubris of trying to redefine one of God’s institutions, like marriage, you are putting yourself in the place of judgement. There’s no question in my mind that God is already judging America and will judge her more harshly as we continue to move down this path towards sexual paganizations.”
—Said homosexuality is of the Devil and leads to the decline/destruction of societies: “Let me just say that first of all that the Devil takes pleasure in anything that causes destruction in human society and the homosexual lifestyle does cause destruction. It’s seen as one of the evidences in the decline of every empire we have seen; studies have shown it became rampant in the Persian Empire, the Greek Empire, the Roman Empire, the British Empire.
—Said of homosexuality: “It’s the one sin that I know about that I find totally incomprehensible.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
