Douglas Napier
Senior Vice President, Alliance Defending Freedom
—Former sponsor of the “Day of Truth,” which was geared toward pushing an “ex-gay” message into public schools; said he wanted Christian students “to be salt and light and to speak the truth.“
—Suggested President Abraham Lincoln, if alive today, would apply an illustration he is quoted as having made in opposition to slavery (“Calling the tail a leg doesn’t make it so”) to modern day opposition of same-sex marriage: “Today, homosexual activists have tried to co-opt the allusion to slavery to advance their demand to redefine marriage to include same-sex couples. Nice try, but if [President] Lincoln were chiming in, he would undoubtedly bring up Euclid. A union of two men or two women is not the same as the union of one man and one woman, and all the rhetorical sleights of hand can’t change that biological and social reality. It’s one of those ‘self-evident truths’ Lincoln referenced. It’s true because thousands of years of science and social history tell us so. Basic biology easily dispels the notion that such a contrived union can’t even approximate the distinct nature and function of the only true definition of marriage—the joining of one man, one woman.”
—Claims homosexuality is “chosen” and that inclusive military service is really a quest to “reorder nature”: “When the activists succeeded in getting [‘don’t ask, don’t tell’] repealed, they knew full well that it didn’t end there. It was only the next step in the quest to redefine social norms and reorder nature. This is just another incident that exposes their rules of engagement—to free up their speech while constraining the speech of everyone who disapproves or disagrees with their chosen sexual behavior.”
—Because of this organization’s pushback against a reality TV star’s shockingly homophobic and racially insensitive comments, accuses GLAAD of wanting an “intolerant, repressive, unrecognizable anti-America.“
—Claims federal employment protections for LGBTQ people protect “a choice of lifestyle” and go against America: ENDA would “strike at the very heart of our American liberties,” said Doug Napier, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund. It’s especially threatening to businesses that are already “regulated to death,” Napier said. “And now we’re going to tell you who you can hire and who you can’t fire, based on a category of protection that is not based on an immutable characteristic, but a choice of lifestyle.”
The GLAAD Accountability Project catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.
