Since its inception in 1988, World AIDS Day has been observed annually on December 1 as a method to raise awareness, increase education and prevention, and decrease the stigma surrounding HIV.
The observance serves as a yearly acknowledgement of the global strides made towards ending the epidemic, as well as a reminder that there is work left to be done in order to completely eradicate HIV and HIV related stigma

GLAAD’s 2023 State of HIV Stigma Report, produced in partnership with the Gilead COMPASS Initiative, found that 90% of Americans believe that there is still stigma surrounding HIV. Additionally, only 49% of Americans feel knowledgeable about HIV and 37% of Americans still inaccurately believe that HIV mostly impacts the LGBTQ community, despite the fact that anyone can contract HIV, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In order to increase public knowledge and dispense accurate information and resources regarding HIV, in both the United States and across the globe, we must continue to be loud, continuous, and unapologetic in our advocacy efforts.
This year in honor of World AIDS Day, GLAAD launched a World AIDS Day Global Resource Hub alongside a social campaign that highlighted facts, television shows, films, advocates, and organizations who are doing their part in ending the HIV epidemic. GLAAD also hosted a number of in-person, local activations across the United States, with particular focus on the south and the communities most impacted by the epidemic.
