Pop music sensation JORDY is back with an all-new album dropping Friday, April 21st! Titled “Boy,” the album is set to feature some of his most personal songs yet. JORDY joined GLAAD’s Anthony Allen Ramos to discuss the upcoming album and the excitement of being nominated for the Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist Award at the 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City on May 13, 2023.
“These songs are really special to me,” JORDY explains. “You hold on to these songs for such a long period of time and they’re sacred to me.” He’s excited to have finally reached the point where it’s time to put the album “out in the world and have it become everybody else’s.”
As an openly gay artist, JORDY is looking forward to people hearing his new music and relating to his stories. JORDY shares that “I came out when I was 15 years old, so I’ve been out for a very long time. I was very fortunate and lucky enough to come from a really supportive community and family.” He goes on to say that “For me as an artist, this is my responsibility to be out and proud and to write music from an honest perspective that’s authentic to my experiences as a gay man. The album is just that, it’s just my real-life honest experiences.”
Fans have already fallen in love with “Story of a Boy,” a single from the album that is a modern twist on the 2000 classic, “Story of a Girl.” JORDY talks about how affirming it was to receive the blessing of the original artist, John Hampson of Nine Days, to re-record the song. “It was a very healing experience,” he says. “This is a song and a perspective that I needed as a queer kid, I needed to hear a boy singing about a boy and what better way to do it than bring this familiar melody back.” JORDY was touched by Hampson’s allyship and commitment to amplifying queer this queer narrative.
JORDY also talks about how incredible it was to perform “Story of a Boy” on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I watched Kelly win American Idol with my family when I was young. For her to be holding my record and seeing that… it was surreal.”
In a time where LGBTQ people are under attack, it’s more important than ever to have role models like JORDY, living their lives authentically and creating relatable art. To young queer people who may be struggling right now, JORDY says that “There are people like me and so many people out here who love you, who hear you, who see you who, and will remind you at any time you need that you are worthy and valid of love.” He goes on to say that “It’s a scary world we’re living in right now. There’s a lot of awful legislation happening and it’s pretty upsetting waking up to new news every single morning… I’m not stopping. We’re going to keep fighting this fight and we will rise together.”
