Yesterday, I was thrilled to host the GLAAD Media Institute’s Media Advocacy Essentials for Bisexual+ People publicly to celebrate the first day of #BiWeek alongside leaders from the Bisexual Resource Center and Still Bisexual. The GLAAD Media Institute works to equip advocates and activists with the best tools to work with the media to accelerate acceptance.
During the workshop, we had meaningful conversations about the issues that bisexual+ people face, and the best ways to talk about bi+ experiences to help others understand. As a group, we talked about the importance of respecting peoples’ labels and identities, statistics about the disparities bi+ people face, tactics to identify your audience and effectively frame your messages to help that audience understand the bi+ community, and the power of storytelling in advocacy. We closed out the workshop reviewing harmful tropes about bi+ people and the opportunity that content creators have to represent our community accurately.
While yesterday’s workshop was focused on the Bi+ community, the GLAAD Media Institute offers a wide array of workshops for activists and advocates—all online, and all free. We recently announced our Fall schedule. Check it out and sign up for a GLAAD Media Institute workshop that interests you at the link here.
About BiWeek
Annually, from September 16-23, join GLAAD, the Bisexual Resource Center, and Still Bisexual in recognizing the bisexual+ community for Bisexual Awareness Week, culminating in Celebrate Bisexuality+ Day on September 23.
Co-founded by GLAAD, Bisexual+ Awareness Week seeks to accelerate acceptance of the bi+ (bisexual, pansexual, fluid, no label, queer, etc.) community. #BiWeek draws attention to the experiences, while also celebrating the resiliency of, the bisexual+ community.
Throughout #BiWeek, allies and bi+ people learn about the history, culture, community, and current policy priorities of bi+ communities.
